nude artwork....offensive?

Just as a matter of intrest, I’m big into my art and trying to finalise the pics for the livingroom, I’ve two pics that I really like (out of the 7 I’ve picked for the room) only issue is the content, one is a blurred nude and the other shows the upper half of a woman pint a smoking gun in which you can see one breast! They are both cracking prints and would really suit the wall they are intended for but I’m concerned at people taking offence :-( don’t really want to compromise on this as I have before but don’t want to cause offence either.....thoughts please.

Art is subjective- you must hang what you like in your house.

IMO you should hang what you like. Art choices do reflect on the owner though but I think usually if someone’s the type who likes nudes on the wall I should think he’s the type who has friends that won’t object? And if family would object then probably they are not in the day to day picture?? Or maybe you’re a provocateur and your friends and family know and love you for it? I’ve known charming provocateurs in my time :)

Thanks, my wife is a but funny about it but when I ask here to pick something she just can’t make a choice so it always ends up me making the choice and these two are just screaming out at me, tbh it’s only really one that has any real on show nudity and it’s just a breast! but it’s quite tasteful :-) think I’ll just go for them tbh.

I find it’s always best to include the views of all the people living in the home when it comes to artwork - as some people can feel different things when looking at art. If you just leave it to one person - you leave yourself open to offending someone !
With nudes - if you even up the sexes that can seem fairer -ie a ladies boob and a chaps pert bottom ? Not all one just one sex !

Think of all the churches that have nude painting hanging on their walls ;0) ha ha.

I once, many years ago, forgot to cover my shoulders in the Sistine Chapel and got told off by the guard. Quite hypocritical when the ceiling and walls were covered in nudes. LOL

I really like OnePlan idea to even up the sexes, it all would make sense and would make the right style statement as such. The regular visitors will stop noticing the pictures failry soon anyway.

It's your house, so therefor you can hang whatever artwork you want to IMO. If someone takes offence, then tough

You have to share an image! Naked woman pointing a gun sounds a bit Alan Partridge to me ;). I’d also say if your wife isn’t keen it’s best to keep searching.

Ohhhhhhhhh, that changes everything Jen, I didn't realise that it was his wife that wasn't keen. Dude, if she's not keen then don't do it! Let her choose what she wants and just swallow your pride. Happy wife = happy life.

Good grief man! Your wife isn’t just people! When I said hang what you like I didn’t know you shared your home and when you share your home each must have a veto over what goes on the wall! No need to ask on here, ask the other person looking at it everyday.
Ps for fun you should post pic of said art!

Just had a thought, that couple on Gogglebox have a massive pair of breasts hanging on the wall behind them. I know that it's Channel 4 and they're pretty relaxed, but if they think that it's ok to broadcast them to over 3 million people then I won't worry.

Stick some Elastoplasts over the nips! You’ll have instantly increased the value of the art and keep the wife happy! If any one asks you could make up a story like her day jobs a bra model for the littlewoods catalogue so she can’t have any pointy bits on show:-). On a serious note tho, if you like it then get it but if other members of the house don’t agree then it may have to reside in the man cave.

I definitely wouldn't take offence at those. I think they are interesting.

Thanks @carolina :-) was hoping that was the case, they are not in your face nudes, just a black and white pic that includes the subject matter amongst other things (well in one anyway) my wife is not offende in any way by them it’s more that she is the one that is afraid of them offending someone that comes in, I think she is over thinking it! If they are offended they are actually not getting why I picked them sadly.

I don’t think the nudity is troubling at all Beano. I think the gun is the most arresting aspect! Let us know how you get on with them. I like black and white imagery and to be honest I think I’d like to see that in a series in a hall or something so it’s part of a bigger display and when your eyes focus on it it has a surprise value if you know what I mean. Interesting

Thanks @emily :-) id live to do that but I think I’ll keep it to the living room as one is going either side of the chimney breast (no pun intended! ) on a very dark grey background, the other pics are all non nude and include two cowboys! Lol, looking foward to getting them now :-)

Now I see them I agree with the earlier comments. Nudes can of course be tasteful but since the picture in question looks straight down the barrel of a gun it probably is better in the Garage.
It seems like it is not supposed to decorate a room but instead to spark debate and perhaps there are rooms that lend themselves more to that.

The images are both rather ‘adult’! Which is completely separate to nudity imo. But if you like them why not?!

Funnily I thought it was the ladies that would have possibly found exception but it seems the other way about as far as where to display! Tbh the barrel of the gun wasn’t in any way what I was concerned about, most films and drama’s nowadays have you in the same position as the picture! it was causing offence at the adult/nudity content, which I’m a bit easier about now :-) as said thanks for all the comments.

I teach life drawing and I think it's all context. Nothing remotely offensive or shocking about a nude, but context is everything.
