You really do need grout for your backsplash, for a proper job that is waterproof and easy to clean. Having said that, I once did a "just for now" refreshing of my tiny kitchen to hold it over for a while until I could afford to totally gut it and start over. I didn't want to bother grouting in some inexpensive tiles as a backsplash because I thought they would only be there for a short time. I painted the backsplash area a similar colour to the tiles, so the stark white plaster would not show through the cracks between the tiles and then lightly glued the tiles to the wall, butting them up directly to one another. Little did I know that I was about to get laid off from my job and it would be 8 years before I could afford to do the renovation I desired. The ungrouted tile backslash held up beautifully and because I was careful, remained dry and clean for that whole time. I just finally did the kitchen reno this past winter and they stayed stuck tight to the plaster as I tore it out. :-)

We're with Valduff. Shades of purple and plum can really add depth to a chic scheme like yours. Particularly with your gorgeous counter top. Grey is also a good call, as it will coordinate with your kitchen units but allow room to add coloured accessories. It can depend on the light quality in your room- we always recommend grabbing some tester opts in a range of shades. Paint your walls or A4 sheets, and see what the colours look like as the light changes throughout the day.

Hi Rosie, It's entirely down to personal preference and the style you're going for. A contrasting backsplash can create a nice focal point and add extra interest if you opt for plain tiles. Just something to consider. This is only a digital render but try to consider the colour and warmth or coolness of the upper cupboards against the colour and warmth or coolness of the worktop. If one reads a warmer than the other and they are equal in terms of lightness then they might clash. Cool worktops and off white warm tiles or cupboards are tricky. Additionally, any under counter lighting - get the best you can, with the highest CRI rating. LEDs vary greatly in light quality and temperature.
