Hi Matthew, Do you still need some advice? The fireplace on it's own isn't bad, however, It doesn't go very well with the décor of the space. I agree with the previous comments, I would get rid of the wallpaper, either paint over it or use wallpaper again, however using light colours, such as; light grey or white. This would definitely look better as it will allow the fireplace to stand out, unlike now, it's competing with the wallpaper too much. In terms of the Fireplace, I would advice to use either stones or bricks, using neutral colours. This will look great in your space. An idea is in the photo.

Hmm yes I see if the wall goes then there may be an area underneath without any flooring, possibly? I’m not a huge fan of quarry tiles, but I do love original features and anything old. I rather like the chequerboard patterned ones! Quarry tiles are still sold in various earthy shades and are quite good value for money. I wonder if doing an edging in black will bring them out more. You can also buy edging tiles especially to finish off a hall, even Topps Tiles have a large collection of Victorian tiles. How do you feel about them?

I think you are wise to avoid a wood burner as they pollute the atmosphere both outside and inside. They produce the same dangerous chemicals that cars do. Definitely avoid if anyone in the home has asthma or breathing problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are eventually banned. If your energy company have renewable electricity, many do, then an electric fire would be a good option.

Agree with Sarah. Another option might be to tile it with brick slips to even out the mishmash of brickwork that you have found. Any total rebuilds of this chimney surround are going to be very expensive. Log burner is your best option. At least now you can have a tall one they look much nicer as the fire is so much higher.
