Are you wanting to keep the colours muted and soft like the chairs, or do you want to introduce a bit of colour? I personally would have a plainish rug, and then add soft pastel shades, such as pale yellow, blue, pink or green, in the cushions to create a cosy country look. Next have some lovely rugs (look online) but here’s a few ideas:

I’m a fan of some of IKEAs “shaggy” rugs in neutral shades. You can then add some colour in cushions -Next, Dunelm and Laura Ashley have a good choice.

I’d look at something with teal as the main colour.

No idea what happened to my previous reply to Sonia? I forgot to mention that we have a border terrier who loves to run in and out into the garden so rug needs to be hard wearing as well as nice to look at. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I love bright colours but I think your furniture would prefer something more muted? Your dog sounds a right little monkey! Maybe choose polypropylene as it doesn’t mind being scrubbed and it’s pretty pet friendly.

Ah ok Sonia - thanks for that. I totally agree with you about muted colours for rug. There is also navy in the check on the sofa so my idea would be neutral rug and use possibly navy and ochre for cushions, throws, accessories etc...? Oh yes our border is a tinker alright, he's 3 years old, I think they calm down when they're about 10 .

My neighbour has two Borders, such cuties! I love navy, although it’s a dark shade, it’s also very soothing and would go beautifully with ochre. Seems like you know what you like which is good. I recently placed an old sofa in my kitchen and with the help of the Houzz community I was able to get it to go with a navy wall which was already there. Love navy!

Wow that sofa looks fab against the dark wall - and cushions are lovely. My hubbie would like an ochre rug and ochre and navy cushions? Oh yes, lots people have 2 borders, very good company for each other but double trouble .

Thank you all for your ideas. We ( hubbies choice as he was fed up looking) ordered a grey dash rug from Next and it came today - it's too busy for the room, much busier than in the pics on the site. It's being returned tomorrow. Definitely looking at plain but textured rugs now.

Thanks for your ideas ibaa Alfityan- I have started purchasing Ochre coloured accessories today, bought a throw and have seen some cushions like the ones you've shown in your pictures.
