Design Ideas please

As part of our building project renovations, we have a hallway and snug with no windows. The snug wall was supposed to be knocked through opening up the hallway but funds have run out. There is now just an opening. The two circles are where the lights would be and the black rectangles are radiators . The floors will be tiled grey.

I’m just stumped on how to design the space. We would like to fit a piano in the snug, any ideas on lighting and design welcome!

Is that the front entrance on the left of the pic, walking into the hallway? If so, I wouldn't put the radiator there and instead have a nice console table. That wall will be the first thing you see. The radiator would be best on side wall.

Also in the hall, why is the ceiling light round the corner? If would be best actually in middle of the hall when you come in? You said the hall has no windows, even more reason it would be better that you can see the light on entering the house, I would perhaps have 2 lights if its dark.

Please post photos.

And if you'd like the wall to be removed, don't tile the floor yet! Renovating on a budget can be tough, but don't settle for less.. Patience.

Where do the snug doors lead to? Are they glass? And the front door too?

These photos give you a better idea of the room space - i want to get rid of the unit in picture 2 and hide the devices in the alcove cupboards plus associated essentials that go with it. The rest is school stuff but we also use that room to do homework anyway. You can also see how shallow the alcoves are.

Hi Ollie, How about moving the door into the Utility Room so that is accessible from the Kitchen side, thus freeing up the wall where the current Utility room door is, and I would recommend you have some form of wall storage on that wall, as you don't immediately see it when you walk into the room. The kids benches could be off that wall too, so that on either side of the chimney breast and as you walk in the room you could have some open shelves / artwork. When the kids are not playing, you could turn this area into a yoga place! And yes, I agree your table could overlap a little with your existing house, unless you have a large beam above, not hidden in the thickness of the floor joists above. Also, I wonder if a round / oval table will work better in your case, and don't forget the lighting relative to your rooflights!

I’m much liking the look of that second layout suggested by Carolina - there are some very clever solutions there!The positioning of the doors is slightly awkward, but this layout creates zones that work nicely. The position of the sofa very cleverly creates a TV zone, and also defines the study area behind it. And those two orange accent chairs are lovely, forming part of the lounge zone whilst also drawing the eye to the windows and the view. And, on days when Joan and her family/visitors want to gaze at the view, they can be simply turned round. There’s just one tiny tweak i might suggest: to remove the coffee table and instead have a side table and lamp to the left of the sofa, in the corner by the door. Otherwise, if that were my room, I’d be looking at the orange chairs and the view as I walked into the room... and I’d trip over the coffee table :-)

It looks a great space, it’s hard to help with shopping suggestions as you’re not in the UK looking at the view! I personally would probably just add curtains on the large window, something light and floaty like linen as I assume you don’t need privacy or do you need to block the sun? I agree with your other suggestions but I might keep the coffee table or change it if you don’t like it. I’d try a large plant in the left corner by the dining table and use a textured basket to put it in. Some stems or candles would also look nice on the dining table. I’d also try a rug under the sofa to zone that area (something with a pattern). I think some more lighting would make it feel cosier so either a floor lamp by the sofa or add a side table and lamp. Assuming the tv isn’t massive you should also have room to add an accent chair opposite the sofa next to the tv? Was the apartment built so as to have bed 3 as part of the living space if wanted? It’s just the bifold doors look a little awkward with a sofa against them and presumably makes furniture placement difficult in the bedroom?

I agree with Rinq, just wait until the funds are available to get what you want if that's an option. In relation to the layout can you also move the cupboard/store under the stair if space allow. If it is going to be a snug then you may not want to open it out into the hallway, so it would be a bit more private, I would even say to add some kind of shutters to the opening in the wall.
