Ceiling lighting in lounge

I'm doing some building work on my house and the builders have asked me if I want to do anything interesting with the lighting in the lounge? It's a funny shaped lounge with LED downlights already in there. I was wondering about doing a sort of concealed 'cornicing' lighting (see below example).

In my room, it would be less wide, probably 20cm wide all the way around the edge of the room (see attached floorplan).

My question is: Would this look weird/odd given the shape of my room?

I much prefer cosy table or wall lamps in a sitting room.

If you do this then I would put the tray ceiling in the larger part of the room only.
However when I have seen it it has made the ceiling seem lower so I would only consider it if your ceiling is 2.6m or higher

Our late Victorian "cottage" has a small sitting room with lining boards on the ceiling. We are going to paint the walls a dark grey, and do white in all the woodwork, with a white fire surround. We are contemplating doing an exposed brick chimney, but are going to wait and see what we get when we take the old plaster off. The question I have is, can you put in a chandelier if the ceiling is all lining boards? Or does it need the plaster and possibly a ceiling rose to make if look good?

I find it a bit of an office/hotel style look rather than a home.

I agree that lamps and other lower level light sources are key for a cosy look.

It’s all a matter of taste and style. Try smaller cornicing with the concealed lighting then your ceiling height or room shape won’t be an issue. Combine with table lamps and you’ll create a lovely ambience. If you fancy it, go for it.
