Separating Driveway From Next Door
I had the driveway done around 2 years ago and, even before this, my neighbour would use my, what was path, and now drive, to take his bin out and bring it back. Occasionally he would decide its a quicker route to cut across my drive than walk up is old fashioned front garden.
We don't get on particularly well, long story, however i really would like to visually divide the properties better. My drive and path down the side of the house is slightly raised compared to theirs. When i had the driveway done i was far too polite and its is more over my side than the middle. In hindsight i'm annoyed that i didnt utilise all the boundary space.
Temporarily i have some metal planters with some buxus in that havent faired so well, this was my hairbrain idea to make a screen of sorts.
Is it possible to put a fence or similar on block paving? or install some sort of screen against the back of the kerbstones that line the drive?
Given the boundary line i'm within my rights to put a fence on the outer edge of the driveway kerbstones as its technically my land, but conscious its all concrete so would no doubt churn up their side by installing it.
I'm after some opinions, i just want my privacy and not have to be barked at by their dog each time i put my bin out or have them walking over my property for no reason.

Comments (21)We went to anti natal class before we had our daughter and the midwife 'teaching' I use the term loosely, asked what to do when I baby is crying and you've done everything you can think of 3 fold. My partner said let baby self soothe to which the midlife replied very sternly "never ever let a baby self soothe if they are crying it is because they are need something" this lady was no older than 20 had no children of her own so instead of speaking from experience she quoted and requoted the national guidelines. Since we were first time parents, naive and let's be honest terrified and since she had 'told off' my partner, we never let our little girl self soothe so she never learned how. She screamed 12 hours a day never slept more than 2 hour stints until she was 2. My partner and I were running on fumes. When I'd had enough and thought I was loosing my mind I let her self sooth (it was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever done) now she sleeps through the night she is 3 and is a genuinely content child. Comments (18)I need to resurrect this thread! So 2 years on we've completed all of the downstairs internal work, and knocked down the garage. We spread some grass seed, and there is now a garden space where once sat the garage. We did have a builder booked in for rebuilding the garage to the side of the house, and planned to add some decking where the patio doors are along the back of the house!/wall maybe, but now the builder has cancelled and is returning our cash, we're therefore reallocating funds to a much needed upstairs bathroom instead. I wonder if there are any budget friendly suggestions and ideas to make an area that will hold gardening tools/provide cover for my partner to do his hobbies by the side of the house? It's a wall then huge hedge beyond that which is directly parallel with a footpath and road on the other side. I thought about a shed but would the hedge not be impossible to cut and would it rot quicker, plus would the roots die off? Comments (12)Some great ideas to consider. Cheers everyone :) I like the idea of potentially halfing the garage space to accomodate a vehicle. Hopefully significantly less cost than full rebuild. I think the garage roof is in need of replacing anyways so denfinetly something to think about. Also it wouldn’t impact the greenhouse behind the garage and could still have the small front garden which looks nice from the front of the house. I am also intending to extend the rear of the house into an open plan kitchen / living area so the side porch may become redundent in the process and look a little odd. Also open to sacrificing the front garden as tab dracy mentioned for ease of access for visitors, delivers etc and once renovation works kick off I could even add a skip. Comments (19)Well it's all done - and I'm over the moon with the finished result. I managed to get some photo's when they left on Saturday afternoon, which was the last time I saw it before it was covered by a deep layer of snow. He did lay some hessian sheets over the collar at the front, so that the temperate would stay above freezing to speed up the setting of the grouting. The front grass now needs a lot of work - but that can definitely wait until the spring now. I need to lay a couple of slabs by the wall to put the bins - where we'll also get some bin storage thingies so that you don't see them. I'm not fussed in the slightest about 'weeds' - ask me again in the spring/summer then I may have changed my mind, but filling a watering can with some industrial strength weed killer and going over the drive a couple of times a year is no biggie. Besides I'm planning on raking it over every now-and-then so I'll just couple those together. I understand that there will be some upkeep to it, but isn't that the case with just about everything these days. Not sure what the next job will be, but I'm sure that the Mrs has something on the horizon. We're getting a new boiler fitted tomorrow, so I'm guessing that 'The Utility Room' will be having a re-design at some point in the new year. But that's all from me for the time being....See More

6 years agoBox plants are prone to box blight which has destroyed many a hedge in some areas, but not others. Remember anything in a planter or pot will need watering regularly, especially during warmer days. The bigger the pot, the less watering. I like Emmanuelle’s ideas, very smart.
i have nice neighbours, but I know not everyone has. I do feel we need to live and let live to a degree to make life easier, but if you have other issues then some kind of barricade is in order. Surround that side with planters so he cannot step onto your drive. Fencing is more difficult as some covenants do not allow fencing of a front garden, so worth checking your deeds. I saw this planter and thought you may get away with this?

It's not shared access, its just a split level rear access, he has a path that goes up the centre of his lawned area. The picture is deceiving but the level between mine and his front area only matches once you come slightly down the drive. The level on my side of the side access has always been about a foot higher.

I like the idea of taller planters, i just need to find some large enough and in keeping with the "look" of the house i guess.So my options are planters that are taller, or remove some of the driveway blocks and put a short fence or wall in.
Would a wall be a better option? i'm only talking a couple of feet high at most.
Perhaps easier to have a low brick wall put in?
i love the stuff these guys do but not sure how i could make them work LINK

Brick walls usually need footings so you will need to dig down, so a bit of a faff unless you’re getting a bricklayer in to do it? Worth considering though. Or what about railways sleepers? Not sure how they would be secured though!
