Lol, Jesse, I had to study that photo AVSinteriors posted forever to figure out what you meant about the tile direction but after I did I do see what you mean. I never thought of it that way but logic states the water would run off the vertical lengths of grout far more successfully than it will the horizontal! I went in the current family bathroom and had a look at the tiling - very interesting. And a plan changer. I'm glad we hadn't gone too far in planning the shower area yet. Well spotted you on that tile, this is the first time I've heard anyone mention that! I love the inset teak mat-floor for the shower area of that wetroom, too.

Love the circular detail in your patio, forzaitalia. I use cleaning vinegar (not sure if there's another English name for it, but it's basically a very strong vinegar that you should NOT use for food) to get rid of moss and algae on pavement. Don't know its effect on sandstone. But it kills off the green stuff, which is more effective than pressure washing it. You just spray it on and wait for it to die. Takes a couple of days. Doesn't return as quickly either. Also works on garden furniture.

Hi Ryan Absolutely love the exterior of your house, i've done a design i hope you like it. I have gone with a touch of modern but also in keeping with the original features and style and history of the house. I've gone for a more Georgian/Tudor door for you in black which i think accentuates the black tiling. You could just paint the door you have and add some DIY stained glass for the pannelling. Adding some lantern wall lights are a great idea to illuminate your entrance space in a safe and also decorative way. Think about adding Drive over lighting around your graveled area to help with parking. I think you should keep the white and exposed brick, maybe just a clean up with a power jet and then a paint should do the trick. I really think you should keep the black features, it adds contrast, so I've kept this in and chosen black outdoor lighting to compliment this. For the garden area I've chosen an alpine and topiary style, alpine succulents and cacti are really in at the moment so if you're wanting a more modern front then definitely go with alpine. Plus you can find some alpine succulents that have a hint of red in them which will compliment the red brick. You could also get some spike lights too, stick them amongst the plants to create a feature. We live in the country and get a fair amount of critters of various sorts. We have a commercial electricutor thingy with a UV tube for flies, which worked well but we noticed that we were also getting a few bees and hoverflies, zapped. So we have stopped using it now and have been trying out venus flytraps this year with a fair amount of success. I feel the number of flies has been less. As to other creepy crawlies, being in an old house, we get a lot of spiders, they either get ignored or safely captured and evicted. Last summer, we had a swarm of hornets that used to pitch up about 8.00 every evening and literally swarm around at the windows attracted by the lights - it was really quite horrific. It was such a nuisance too, as we couldn't open any windows or doors in the evening but we didn't know where the nest was, so we couldn't get rid of it. But they seemed to have not survived last winter, so none this year. But we've been plagued with wasp this summer, we actually had 6 different nests around the outside of the house and we had to have the pest man out a few times - I think it cost us nearly £300 in the end for all the call outs.
