Hi, I want to change my stainless steel splash back as think it looks quite clinical. I like the idea of chevron tiles and have seen some online in a marble effect, however I’m not sure where I’d tile. I naturally thought across the wall and up to the cooker hood but a friend thought it may look odd as it would appear uneven as not equal space either side of the cooker. I don’t really want a bold colour and I’m not sure I really like just a patch behind the cooker, if anyone has advice, tips or any guidance, I would be most grateful!!

How about glass? Tiles and grouting behind a hob get greasy and dirty. Glass comes in a huge range of colours or even pictures or photos!

Here is a piece I had made to match my Aga. ( Sorry it’s an old photo so not brilliant )

As you have an upstand, I think just tiling behind the cooker would be fine. I really like tiling and I’ve had mine for 10 years and it still looks good. They are glass mosaic tiles and really easy to clean. I agree glass would be a good choice too. I really like your choice and here are a few more subtle ideas.

We vote tiles! If it was my kitchen (and mostly because I'm a messy cook) I would be inclined to tile (or glass backsplash) anywhere that might need to be wiped down-e.g. behind cooker, along any counters where I might be doing any food prep. This gives you plenty of options-you could tile behind cooker and counters in metro/subway tiles, but be careful as it could look busy with the granite and wood grain of kitchen-it will depend on the grout. Alternatively, you could use big clean glossy tiles like this marble look above.

Thank you for all suggestions. Fiona that is a good idea also - i'll have a look around. I particularly love your idea Planetharrywood of the gradual effect! Do you know where I could buy something to replicate this? Love the micro cement idea as well - pity you don't live closer! DAG Inter - i LOVE the idea of mirrors but backed away from the idea after being told about how much it is likely to cost! I think i perhaps should get a real quote though. Is there any software or perhaps even websites with samples that i could order to try and mimic some looks? Finding it hard to wind down on a decision.

Lovely kitchen - very nice design and beautifully finished! Wrt splashbacks - glass is probably the first choice, with near infinite posibilities wrt colour, print or even a hint of sparkle. Decoglaze have some fantastic options in their Decokiln range if you want to add some interesting textures. If cost is an option, you could consider acrylics, as you do not need to worry about heat. As a last thought, would you consider a feature geometric tile, such as these from Ted Baker? If used sparingly as an accent, they could work really well with your design and colour scheme. Saw an article on Apartment Therapy talking about mirrored splashbacks recently. Had some lovely photos featured, I personally preferred the options where the glass is raised up from the hob slightly. Could you maybe get a piece of the upstand cut to fill the gap? Also having it 'framed' by wall either side looks better to me than it spanning the whole space. I've mocked it up to extractor fan level and to ceiling level (I've guesstimated the tile scale but hope it gives you the idea). If you did do tiles - which would look great - say chevron style if you like these - and do a darker grout - behind the cooker does get splattered, so the darker grout would not show - the tile area needs to cover right up to the top of the kitchen cupboards and round the cooker hood. It is strange how years ago everyone stuck a piece of stainless steel there - they are a nightmare to clean, and admittedly look out of place.
