Mudroom solution

I am currently struggling with how to create a mudroom area to house coats, shoes, hats, gloves, sun screen, etc. for a family of five. Ideas are most welcome! The dept the of the space along the wall is 14" and width of wall is 106". I'm not fond of clutter.

You'd need to measure accurately, but the Hemnes hat rack (13 3/8") might work. Or for a plainer look you could use the Tjusig. You can put two or three of them together. That would put hats high enough that it would not feel too crowded. For gloves, sunscreen, etc. you might need a hanging pocket storage thing. There are matching units that you can place below the racks for shoes etc, but your heater would make that difficult.

Your biggest challenge is the heater that runs along the bottom making it impossible to do anything along the floor.

Your best bet is going to be the Pottery Barn Gabrielle system. Its depth for the majority of components are 14" deep or less. Its stylish and you can add as much or as little as you want to suit your needs. Also since this looks to be a laundry area as well you can take advantage of some of the laundry components if you want.

I would do that entire wall or the whole space in a durable vinyl wallpaper. Thibaut makes some great textured vinyl faux grasscloth papers that are exceedingly durable.

I am not sure why you have the taped plastic on the floor but I would look into getting a washable runner. Ruggable makes rugs that can be thrown in the washer.

Also I would consider removing the bifold doors in front of your washer and dryer. If you were to do that think about how much more roomy the space would feel. If you really want to make it more functional I would take down the closet like surround for the washer and dryer and really open that space up and then do open shelving above the washer and dryer.

if they are front load then you could do a functional counter over the top of them like shown

If you were to do that you could really do some custom built ins to take this to the next level.

Hi Emma, I've been messing around with your layout below. Mainly the side to rear extension along the drive. - I'm not sure whether you would be able to move that wall in the kitchen (I'm assuming it's load-bearing, along with the column and you'd need a structural beam) but I'd have a breakfast bar rather than an island. It's recommended you have at least 4ft clearance for a kitchen island and with the dining table being on the other side, there will not be enough space to manoeuvre around it. With a slimmer breakfast bar (say 60cm) you could put essential coffee/tea making items on it, have some shallow open shelving below and have space for 2 high stools on the other side. - I've placed the toilet in a utility room, as you don't want to toilet directly off the kitchen. Plus you gain a dedicated space for laundry and a mudroom of sorts which is accessible from the garden and garage. - You could build a cushioned bench seat along the wall where the toilet was. Creates some more casual seating for guests whilst your cooking and is a place you can work from. Maybe get one of these cantilevered tables which could double as a laptop stand and side table. These are just my 2 cents! Professional planners like @OnePlan can give you some really good layout solutions.

However, if your cabinet is actually two pieces that can be separated, you could alternatively create more symmetry by placing the fridge centrally in between them. I would place the cabinets flush against the walls, leaving an equal gap around each side of the fridge. Consider cutting the skirting board to make them truly flush for a built in look (or alternatively use a thin filler piece painted to match.) Then you would need two boards… one atop the cabinets wall to wall, and a shorter one along the top of the fridge that goes cabinet to cabinet.

Thanks Victoria and 1shanson - I love both those ideas! Shame I don't drink or have a dog lol but I love creative ideas for using up otherwise redundant bits of space. I think I'll have to do as minnie101 suggested and leave it open, and secretly mourn the loss of my reading nook ; ) I was thinking of putting a console table and mirror under the stairs though? As the big wall next to the front door has the kitchen door opening out onto it. Loads of light there luckily as the kitchen and lounge doors are part glazed, and the hallway has a double/full? height ceiling that goes up to the roof beam, with some velux up there too.

Hi!, as a furniture/kitchen designer for over 30 years I try to come to the clients with a complete open mind. I ask the question that I need to understand how you live and want to live 10 years from now 15 years from now and so on. It's vital to open the time conversations as often families consider that as it is, is how we plan and build. When in reality we all age together and we all keep moving, of we are lucky to be healthy and able. So! Starting from that prospective I'll build a picture based on first the practicals.... How many people living in the house ? Age profile? Special food needs? How do you like to cook Range or oven & hob? 6.Have you a preference of sinks? ie Belfast sink or undermounted sink? Have you a thought on boiling water taps? What's your opinion on worktops? Quartz, Granite, wood, Corian, laminate? After that it down to the nicer things. What colours, textures and layout work best. After that it's lighting and that's a life if its own.

Baseboard heating solution and combine drawers, shelves/baskets and cupboards or hooks to suit your needs And could go out 12” which should work. You would centre on wall but end far enough away from doors for easier access
