Hi! After taking off MDF surround from the fireplace I found what looks like an art deco fireplace (the house was built in late 50s). Before discovering this I had planned to take the fireplace out and replace it but now it kind of seems like a sin to get rid on an original feature like this but not sure what to do with it! It's missing tiles on either side. I'm not sure if I should put plain tiles there and then paint the whole thing? Has anybody done this before or have any suggestions? Thanks very much, Ciara:-)

The Art Deco period ended just before WW2 so I don’t think it’s authentic, or it may have been built in the style of Art Deco. I normally don’t like tiled fireplaces, but I do rather like yours. To my untrained eye the white bit doesn’t look part of it? I would try painting it the same as the wall, but ideally get that bit plastered smooth and then paint it.

The white bit may well be part of it, Sonia. There were probably the same tiles as the rest present. Don’t you think?

It’s a fairly attractive fireplace but a little pastiche though.

If it doesn’t work with the rest of your house or your vision for the interior, I’d consider taking it out.

I recommend, because of the Spanish/ Mexican themes I can spot within the fireplace I would add colourful tiles around the fireplace to make it the centre of attention and to make it more interesting. However, considering that this is a living a would recommend terracotta or a warm subtle vermillion colour, or if you prefer bright colours I would either go with turquoise, pink, red, green or dark blue. I would not recommend yellow as yellow is a bit garish and would not compliment the fireplace whatsoever. The same with gold really. Personally I would choose red for the walls :) Hope this helps :) Dark wooden furniture might also go with the colours :) A mirror above the fireplace would also add a lovely touch by extending the lights so it wouldn't be too dark :)

The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work.

In terms of sofas, you might like the Lune sofa from Fritz Hansen. It's got a lovely Scandinavian style, and is curved and soft, so fits in with lots of different interiors, including an Art Deco room. These kind of fireplaces are pretty divisive with a fair share of lovers and haters. In this instance I'd go with you instincts: it's not very pretty plus it's out of keeping for the period. I'd reinstate something more sympathetic to the age of the house, or seal it up and enjoy the additional wall space if it gives more flexibility (more important for a bedroom perhaps than a living room where you may want a focal point) Best of luck whatever you decide.
