Serious mould/damp problem

Hi, we are having a big problem with mould/damp which is in the side small cupboards either side of our front door (1930’s semi). This cupboard in the photo is he worse of the two and it’s where our electric metre is. I’m also worrying as I’ve seen a damp patch on our box room wall which is also an external wall above this cupboard. It’s where our toddler sleeps which does worry me more.

Can anyone give any any advice on what we can do?

I’m no expert, but maybe there is a leaking gutter above so the water is running down the wall? Next time it rains, go outside and see if it is leaking or overflowing. Is there a water cylinder in the room above? If that’s leaking then it may be the culprit. Mine was leaking and I didn’t know until I saw a mushroom growing on the carpet! Hope you get it sorted soon.

Likely a leaking Downpipe or gutter as Sonia says.
Short term get the mildew cleaner you use on the shower and clean the inside wall.

oh that's great news! We bought the proper knife to cut it with, when wallpaper scissors, stanley knives and scalpels didn't work, it was less than £10 but it made all the difference, saved time, frustration and bad language. :))) http://www.gowallpaper.co.uk/ofla-heavy-duty-x-design-auto-snap-knife-18mm.html best of luck ps the thermal liner can dent, so don't let the decorator lean heavy tools against it :))

Jane we also developed this problem in our 80s built house, especially after a double extension which was brick built and the house being timber framed and then a ground floor bedroom built about 5 years ago which is well insulated and has good airflow; it seems to have affected our upstairs bedrooms more now. My husband fitted air vents in the windows which has given a slight improvement in the winter and then I make sure the heating is on in those rooms during the day winter time, but I have to turn them off at night. When the ground floor extension was built the Building Control of our local Authority, made the builders put covers all along the top of the new flat room which I think has cover the air bricks, we don't know what to do about this as if we take them off the rain/snow could well affect it even more. Hope you get a solution as I am still looking for one too.

I think it's a leak as well. We had an almost identical problem in the kitchen, less than a year after complete renovation; it took another year until we had it sort it because the builder argued it wasn't his fault and wouldn't show up to have it fixed, etc. In the end, he finally came and I wanted to kill him: the pipe connection for the outside tap hadn't been tightened enough and it was dripping... all he did was to rotate the valve (or whatever that's called) and it was all sort it... ahhhhhm!!! Of course, we had to put up with re-plastering, waiting to dry, painting, etc, the whole thing took ages... So, whatever you do, don't leave it for too long, unfortunately it's only going to get worse.

my house is a 1920's semi so it isn't a good comparison with your old farmhouse. We had condensation running down the exterior walls of the all bedrooms , the windows and the stair wall. When we removed the wallpaper, there was black mould! This was despite the house having double glazed windows, GCH , extractors in the bathroom and kitchen and an insulated loft. We had the house rendered, trickle vents put on all the windows and radiators moved to under the windows. All the plaster was blown, so we had this replaced as well. Because the whole house was replastered, I put those plastic moisture traps in every room. I think that this combination has really helped with the condensation, we haven't had any since.

hi can you provide a photo of the outside of the property. it may be the fact that the cupboard is built using a single skin of brick and the condensation is merely the cold exterior and warm interior allowing condensation on the inner wall.

if you can take a photo and also measure the thickness of the wall at this point between the interior and exterior.

post as much as you can and I can review as much as possible.
