open plan kitchen plan dilemma

Hi, we are in the process of buying a new house and want to open up the kitchen as a kitchen diner / family room. It’s essentially an L shape if we opened up the wall between the kitchen and what’s called the bedroom on the floor plan. We keep going back and forth with ideas such as moving the back door to make full use of the back wall but wondered if anyone had any ideas on how best to fit a good sized kitchen into this space. Any help and suggestions much appreciated

Knock wall between kitchen and living room,
Open up the space

Block up door to bedroom, create wall space for kitchen
Make entrance to bedroom from front hall, shaded in blue, as bedroom is very narrow to incorporate into kitchen
Also kitchen area better at rear for privacy

Where do you get the sun? That for me would influence whether to knock through to the bedroom or living room.

I think a wood floor would still work if it was either a really close match to the island finish or completely different - much lighter wood. I definitely wouldn't go for tiles without underfloor heating.

Personally I don't think you will gain much extra space by blocking up either opening and if you were to open up the kitchen through the hatch you might get more light but you will create flooring problems. I think many people would also want to see an approximate floor plan to provide a more definitive opinion. From what I can see I think that you keep a similar layout but perhaps move the sink and hob further apart to create more work space. I think modern cabinets will help it feel more contemporary- given that it is a small space with no window I would choose a handleless kitchen with integrated appliances and have cabinets, work surfaces and splash backs in the same pale colour. Modern lighting will also help.

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. Thanks for your feedback. It’s good to hear from someone with a similar setup. Yes most time is spent in the lounge as it’s near the garden and is the nicest of all the rooms. The current dining room can be a bit shut away and get quite cold. If we were to change it and move the lounge to the front we know this would still be an issue but we would plan on making is cosier with furnishings. There is also an external chimney breast we would reinstate to be able to install a fire. Which as a lounge we would use, but as a dining room not so much. Yes there is a room above unfortunately but we would have two side windows facing west and the large patio doors facing south. Usually once we get to mid morning the sun fills the current lounge and kitchen through most of the day and evening, which is almost too much in the summer! But I guess in the winter that won’t necessarily be the case. Something worth thinking about I guess before deciding.

The garden is south facing so the sun comes through the kitchen and living room windows. We have thought about going into the the Living room, our Hesitation is it’s a good sized room with a nice fireplace. We have also thought about maybe extending out a metre or so from the kitchen to square it off but assuming this would be pretty expensive to do

You haven't said where the garden is ie is it on the kitchen side or lounge?

Knock down the wall between the kitchen and living room, if the living room is south facing, maintain the double doors and make that part of the house the focal point. Close off the door in the kitchen. Budget permitting extend the wall to be in line with the kitchen wall.
