Grout width too thick

I had no idea that grout width was a thing, and now that my project is ready I'm so disappointed at my contractor that we didn't discuss it. The width he made was 1/4, and I am not happy with it. Is this width too much? What should I do?

Comments (18)Great apartment. I would agree with the previous comment about getting an interior designer on board, preferably one whom will pass on their trade discounts! I also agree with other comments re zoning, scale etc. I'd also decide what you want to do with the kitchen before looking at the rest of the room as it's a little awkward. I don't know if it would be possible to get a flue in the roof for a suspended log burner? Alternatively which I prefer (but would get a render done first!) is to have a double sided bioethanol fireplace finished in a polished plaster to add texture. I'm not sure what the 5 doors/panels are but could they be covered in a leather/shagreen leather again for texture and interest. You're lacking walls to add art so you could look at suspending double sided art from the ceiling (last pic just to give an idea!) or add sculptures on plinth/s or an art rug (if in budget Knots rugs do some fantastic ones). I'd also look at adding pendant lights. I'd also go for the same style blinds to what they have in place now. If you add lots of textures elsewhere then curtains aren't really needed and I'm not sure they'd enhance such a great feature. Perhaps look into solar window film to make the light more bearable and prevent fading? Does the balcony wrap around as potted plants would also add privacy?...See MoreToo Much Glass??
Comments (20)1. My house will become like a greenhouse and get extremely hot in the Summer. Yes, this is a real risk. As part of the Building Regulations package a SAP calculation will need to be completed and a separate sub-calculation that assesses heat gain also completed. If the heat gain calc doesn't pass you may have to introduce shading, use heat reflective solar control glass [usually tinted] or reduce the amount of glass. Regardless of what the calc says I'd recommend using solar control glass as it always gets hotter than you think. Another option to consider, assuming you are installing MVHR [mechanical ventilation with heat recovery], is summer shut off function so the heat exchanger is not used so cooler air introduced. 2. Would lose heat in the winter as glass may not be as efficient as brick. Shouldn't be a problem as new modern windows [possibly triple glazed?] are very energy efficient. Although not as good as walls, roofs etc. they are very good. The whole house average energy consumption is also calculated so if lots of glass other methods are used to compensate such as more insulation elsewhere or better heating / energy sources. 3. Security is compromised. Might be a problem so ensure all glazing, windows and doors are PAS 24 / Secured by Design standard for entire assembly, frames, locks and glass etc. Laminated security glass etc. High performance solar control glass with enhanced security performance = expensive glass etc. The design looks nice and would lend itself nicely to timber frame construction. Comments (6)Yeah sure, I doubt we'll do anything upstairs other than steal some space from the back bedroom to enlarge the bathroom and remove the bathroom / toilet partition. Comments (5)Yes, I have decided to withold payment. I went to the local tile shop today where he also goes to buy materials. I didn't mention any names or identify him. When I showed the woman behind the counter the pics, she advised to not pay. She said not good enough. She also said there is no way whatsoever that the correct grout colour has been used. We think that the guy's labourer/second in command must have used the charcoal colour from the floor tiles on the walls as well. It is quite possible that they have miscommunicated on this. I have included two more pics here to show the colour discrepancy. The silver grey is the one with the green dots. The charcoal is three shades down from that. I feel better for staking a stand on this. The tiler seemed like a reasonable enough guy but I am not going to accept crappy work, otherwise what's the point of spending all that money on a major home renovation that is meant to properly upgrade the whole house?
