Fireplaces Design Dilemma

Removed fireplaces: hearth ideas

Hi everyone,
We’ve just had floors sanded and lacquered in a Victorian house.Four rooms (sitting room; master bedroom; child’s room and playroom of sorts) have had the fireplace removed but nothing done with the remaining space. In the bedrooms, we’ll probably put the bed over this but it will be visible in the other two rooms.
We’d like to still tidy the bedroom ones up and will need to do something (decorative?) in the other rooms.We could think about reinstalling the fireplace (for decoration only) or maybe tiling underneath. Budget is tight at this stage.
Any ideas or tips from others on this?

Would definitely reinstate the original fireplaces even if a facade Orla.

If the fireplaces were genuine Victorian ones I would reinstate them. Victorian fireplaces are very sought after.

How are you with painting?? If the surface smooth enough it could work well, then you can have the designs that you want at the cost of two pots of paint and some masking tape! A little time consuming perhaps but very cheap. My wife, has painted concrete several times for clients. She's painted concrete on a chimney stack to mimic old reclaim bricks and mortar where someone did a patch job, and even a circular pond on a patio ( fake obviously ). Givei it a go.

I think your best bet is to get a piece of stone cut to fit from a stone merchants. We had slate cut to fit for our hearth. I can’t remember the exact cost but I think it was around £100 five years ago. If you’re keeping the curve shape as a feature, it’s worth paying a bit more for it to stand out for the right reasons than making a feature of something that isn’t quite right.

I still love the dirty yellow colour, do you know what colour it is? The blue is very strong and it brings out the orange in the fireplace in a very contrasting way. Complementary colours exaggerate each other and if both are strong they clash, if one is more muted then they look more balanced. Analogous colour schemes look harmonious as you don't get the strong contrast of opposite colours. Its personal taste. I love the ochre and I would paint it in the alcoves as long as it worked wiht the carpet. Probably not what you wanted to hear...

I agree. Reinstate the fireplaces. Not only will they look great (and you can paint them to match each colour scheme or just go for all white, or all black) but they will also add perceived value to your house. People who look at Victorian houses mostly like original features, or at least a nod to the past.

Reinstate but make sure to do the right style and size look at what are in neighbouring houses to see what was there orginally. They make a room!
