Fireplace wall ideas?

Ive been asked to help decorate this living room. Sorry, its the only photo ive got. But this is the main issue. Wnat to do with the fireplace and side units. The fire surround is quite old but the fire is relatively new.Also the skirtings, facings and windowsill are oak. Would you paint them. The windowsill is lovely. They want a white door but i dont think itll go very well.

It's not your house? Why are you decorating it? Are you able to rip it all out?

We are a stove showroom that offers a supply and install package. Myself personally, I would go down the fire board the chamber route on the sides, square off the opening as the arch is small or just leave the arch brickwork exposed and split face oyster slate the back of the opening which will give you a nice light opening, the sides can then be painted a light colour. The hearth I would recommend something rustic such as an Indian stone which will tie in nicely with the oyster back. If you square off the opening this leaves you the option to install a beam or not. I have attached a picture of something like what I would recommend. The stove is a DG Ivar which at the minute is an extremely popular option.

I like idea 1 with white shelving and walls, and red paint inside the alcoves - we had something similar in our old house and it worked really well (although we actually had blue tiles inside the fireplace). If it's north facing I would go for a warmer white (not cream) which will help bounce light around, and the red alcoves and fire surround will make it cosy in the winter. For my taste the all over red is too dark - might be nice in winter but not for the summer. The grey painted one does look nice in the picture but I avoid grey on principle ;-) I like the fabric but since the tiles are in situ I would be coordinating paint with tiles and fabric with paint in that order! I think fabric with a rich blue might look really nice too.

Ive been asked to help decorate it.

And yes,the alcove units can be taken out. Not sure on the fire surround but definitely not the fire.

My thoughts are to paint the alcove units either in white or to match whatever colour you paint the walls. You can also paint the fire surrounds to match the units. Sand the units, then paint 2 coats of primer and then 2 coats of eggshell. I would paint the woodwork also in white or the same colour as the walls but use eggshell on the woodwork.

Do you have a colour you wish to paint the walls?

I was thinking of ripping them out altogether but wasnt exactly sure what to do. but painting them could be an option too.

The suite is a dark grey/mink colour suite, so would have the walls, units and fireplace something paler to go with that.
