Hi, Using colour: I would stay neutral for the walls above the units; a great colour example of this is 'Strong White' by Farrow and Ball and then for the wall on the left of the photo I would have this as a feature all and go for a darker tone such as 'Green Blue' by Farrow and Ball. Using lighting: spotlights are great as they can provide an even spread of light in your kitchen, especially if you are limited in natural light. Due to having a dark coloured back splash, having under cabinet spotlights on a separate electrical circuit would provide additional lighting on the worktop area in the evening and night hours. You definitely haven't got the whole lot wrong. I think it looks a very smart room. I like the shape and colour of your sofas and think they look great with the curtain/cushion fabric. Likewise I think the rug is a really good colour. I wouldn't change colour but if I you really pushed me I'd say get a bigger size (poss more about me than you! I've always kicked myself for not going larger with rug in my living room). Again if I was splitting hairs I'd say the colour of the units (TV, side tables etc) is not quite right. It's a bit too warm beigey for the other colours in there. So I'd maybe consider painting those either darker, cool undertone colour or maybe even the cream/white shade you've got on radiator wall/alcoves.

I think you need to plan out the room before a paint brush is even picked up. Create a mood board with paint colours, bedding and furniture. The painting should ideally be chosen last to fit around the furniture and bedding, those items are expensive, paint isn’t. I am a huge fan of green in a bedroom as it is so restful. Team it with white bedding, a throw in green or pink, some pretty cushions in green/pink and white bedside tables etc. I have Cromarty in a NE room and it never feels cold or dark. Taupe shades can look good but in a darker room they can look a bit brown. Dulux Egyptian Cotton or some of the F&B neutrals can look good. If you paint samples onto A4 card and stick them with blu tack at different places will help you gauge the colours at different times of day. This is Cromarty.
