Window shutters for odd shaped windows

We are about to purchase a property with quirky layout and windows.
Any creative, innovative solutions for blinds and shutters? Otherwise It would be impossible to go to bed in the summer time! Photos attached. Thank you.

It looks like a bay in that it's set into an alcove, but one side is bricks instead of glass.I see a couple of good choices: - Put a curved rail round the whole bay, including the bits of wall to either side. When you draw the curtains back they should sit against the side walls and not over any bit of the window - or that odd blank bit the other side. You'd need to use curtains which just skimmed the windowsill - Put a straight curtain rail attatched to the ceiling inside the entire bay and extending a bit to either side. When the curtains are closed you will lose the bay entirely, and when they're open the curtains will draw back so they sit against the walls of the room. I would definitely use floor length curtains and size the rail so that the curtains just covered the corners of the wall. In my opinion the second option would look nicest, and may be less expensive (curved curtain rails tend to come in ultra-flimsy or expensive). It would however mean you can't put anything partly into the bay, so it depends how you use your room.

Hi Lauren! I worked on a project with a similar situation! The windows were in a spare bedroom, so ideally they really did need to be covered at night time, however only when people were staying over. We had venetian blinds made for the standard rectangular window, then for the 2 angled windows, we produced a 'shield'. Basically, we got our joiner to make two shields which were templated to the same shape as the window reveals, with a handle in the centre, which then hooked on to the window. So they could be taken up and down as you wish. They were produced in oak and finished the same colour as the rest of the joinery and blinds, with a handle in pewter to match the rest of the ironmongery in the house. Unfortunately I don't have ay photos of the shields, but you can see the window, and the hooks that the shield mounts on to! We found this to be the most simple, unfussy option, and you are still able to see the windows in their full glory. The shields are kept in the cupboard when not being used. I hope this helps! Is there room for one or two 'flip-up' shutters in plywood, cut to triangular shape (one each side, hinged to sides, or single one hinged on bottom), raised and lowered by a simple cord, eyelet and cleat system? The whole window has an 'origami' look to it which makes one want to keep to crisp planes and avoid anything frilly. You could even have a different colour for each side...but, as I say, that would depend if the window is deep enough to accommodate the 'flaps' when open.

We have a similarly large triangular window in our loft. When it was first done (about 10 years ago) there wasn’t much option, so we ended up with pull-up conservatory type blinds from Hilary’s. They cost a fortune and they have strings that run up the windows that are always visible. The blinds have little perforations that the strings run through - so we haven’t got black out. It doesn’t bother me, but my husband sleeps in the spare room in summer because he can’t stand it!!! We finally took the plunge and ordered shutters which are being fitted next Saturday. Fingers crossed it improved things! The shutters should also be more robust - one of our cats likes to poke the blinds. If money allows - I reckon shutters are the better option!

Thank you! Which company did you use? Those windows are on both sides of the house and our priority would be our toddler’s room. We have roller blinds in the current house and light still came in a lot during the summer and he was often up before 6AM😩 We are having to use kids black out curtains with suction cups from John Lewis. But they won’t work with those window shape.

Yesterday was the longest day (21st) and in the summer I’m well and truly awake by 5am! It suits me but not my husband 😂😂

Our original blinds were from Hilary’s. Think they cost around £2k a few years ago. The shutters are being supplied by a local company who friends have recommended. Quotes came in between £2.5k and over 4k!!!

The shutter company also do blinds and say they can fit remote control top down blinds - they are a similar price to the shutters. We’ve gone with the shutters though because of the cat!

Sometimes there are times that it is a pity to make replacement windows because they are unusual and antique. Such windows can be repaired.
