Hi Laurence, have you considered using recessed lighting uplights to shine up the wall. The reflected light will illuminate the whole room. I would suggest using high power LED Strip like our Samsung Strip, it is 1000 Lumens per Metre and draws just 8.2w of power. If you need it even brighter we have the 2000/m Lumen version. The effect uplighting will create will be less industrial looking than Corn Lamps. hi Beth, asbestos is dangerous when the individual fibres are released and breathed in. the presence of asbestos within the artex is only a problem when fixing and altering the rooms. I personally would have it removed, but that can be costly. you can fill and decorate without rubbing down, but you will probably get crack reoccurring. alternatively skim over the ceiling and decorate as that will give you a good base for decorating and avoid the worry of the asbestos. it can limit what you can do in terms of adding lighting and other improvements to the house as well as adding to costs going forwards as you will have to tread carefully around any holes being formed in the ceiling for lights etc. best Rowland

Sorting hole in wall is easy, sorting damage already done though..... if significant damp in cavity wall you from pipe you could have huge issues though: corroded wall ties etc. Hard to say for rest of it: Kitchen say 10k for new units, tiles, flooring etc (fitted) but whack another 5 to 10k on if you want to rearrange location of stuff that requires plumbing, electrics and plaster. Say 5 to 10 for bathroom.  Boards is an intresting on, what boards are beneith carpet? If just standard mdf board and you mean new engineered wood floor throughout then really depends on size, initial guess would be 10k fitted. Plus redecorating = a a few thousand depending on how much and what you do yourself. But if the house is in disrepair you're going to want contingency: roof, central heating, electrics.... Potential damp in cavity wall...?
