If you raise the table, wouldn’t the seat height be too low to comfortable dine? Unless you gave everyone a booster seat to sit on. It is a beautiful table.

Gulp. @Susie (is this how you tag someone??). Thanks for the quick reply! I didn’t think of that. I was so focused on the chairs going under. Hmmm the chair seat is 18 inches high. And it’s antique with 3 leaves! One can eat a lil far from the table right? Right? 😬😀

No, you can't use armchairs with a table like that, and even with armless chairs I hope all your family members and guests have slender thighs.

Did you measure the depth from table top eating surface to the bottom of the apron yourself? It looks like more than 5 inches in the photo.

By the way, if you raise the table with leg lifts you could use counter height chairs.

Thanks @mytwo cents. Slender - we are not! I did the math on the 5 inches - pending a confirmation call to the sender. On the listing, the table height was 29 inches and there was a reference to “table knee clearance - 24 inches”. Any way? Any way at all?

I would ask the seller to confirm the apron + table top thickness measurement, but in the meantime you can run your own experiments if you have a dining table 29 inches high. Sit in your chair and hold your phone against the table. to check the clearance. Most phones are a bit longer than 5.5 inches. See if you can smoothly move the phone along the edge of the table across your lap without it touching your legs.

If you've got enough books an inch high, prop one under each leg of the table and see if the dining height still feels comfortable. If you have any chairs with seats lower than 18 inches, try those.

You'll never get your armchairs under the table. But you can see if armless or slope arms might work. Although you can buy things to raise the table as much as 6 inches (bed leg lifts), I doubt you can easily find counter height chairs that are as comfortable as standard dining chairs or that match the rich style of the antique table. -- and if you do find them, I can imagine acquiring 6-10 of them would be quite $$$$.

Gotcha @mytwo cents. Here’s the question that’s scrambling my brain. If table is indeed 29 inches high and IF the apron is 5 inches - meaning the height from the floor to the bottom of apron is 24 inches then yes - my dining chairs - with a 26 inch arm height - would clearly not work.

But if I raise the table say at least 2 or 3 inches ( adding feet, higher casters, I dunno) then doesn’t the apron also rise, giving me the extra necessary inches for the dining chairs to go under?

The solution is chairs without arms, besides armchairs are rarely used on round tables this small in diameter. You require a larger circumference to accommodate arms.

Thanks @Beverly. Let me get the dimensions…. table is oval - 53 inches x 43 x 29.5 inches high. It comes with three leaves at 23 inches each. I had imagined my chairs (not home so don’t have a pic but they’re 4 French bridge chairs) around the table mostly serving as a game/dining table in a sunroom - then expand to have larger gatherings. So I do have the capacity to expand the table. Does that make a difference?

As much as you love that table, you can't force it to work with your arm chairs. If you raise it, then the seat height of your current chairs is too low to sit at the table. Sophie's choice: choose the table and lose the chairs or keep the chairs and keep looking for a table.

When it's open does the apron extend across the entire table? My dining table has an apron, but when we extend it the apron does not extend where the leaves are. In that case, you could use your arm chairs at those points and use armless chairs everywhere else. However, having armed chairs at that table is going to invite a lot of banging around and your beautiful table will have a lot of nicks.

Nothing worse than a table with too high of an apron that limits your leg/thigh space. I got rid of a kitchen table for that reason.

If anyone is still around - would this match work? Totally different look. But feeling I’m safest with no apron. Chairs look like these but dark mahogany wood.
