Building a Home Exteriors Design Dilemma

Front door help

We are part way through our extension and need to decide on a front door for the porch. We're having real difficulty deciding as the front of the house is such a mess still, and we can't visualise (plus the porch isn't built yet!) Most of the front has now been rendered which helps, but would love some input.
We just can't decide on a colour or style of door. The only definite is that we don't want one of the modern long door handles.
The windows are staying white and the garage door probably will be too.
We were thinking of French grey, but keep changing our minds!
The door will have full size lights/side panels either side.

It's really hard at this stage to choose anything. I would just do a ton of research on Houzz and on google images of modern front doors. It really depends on what colour you are painting the render. I think a natural oak veneered door might make a good focal point. Find out the door lead times well in advance too as it's not something on which you need a delivery/installation delay.

You have such a neutral color pallet, pretty much any colour you love will work. French grey is a classic, as is Isla’s suggestion. I did my front door a deep navy which I loved. I changed it to a royal blue when I changed the door and I like it but not as much as I did the navy. It was inkpot blue by colortrend. Hi miss. To put just right and the best solution for your entrance is very important and we can say dificould to. There is many important facts you should think about ( architecture situacion, your taste and wishes, investition, how strong is the day light etc.) You have two posibilities, chouse and make artistic stained glass before paonting the interior to chouse color of wall on stained glass or second which is more dificould and left to designer of glass less space is to make the project for already colored ambient. If its important for you is great to think input the glasses in triplex glass sistem (stained glass is in the midle of two glasses) to protect them, easy cleaning and get a good U thermo index. You can use one of two diferent technics of stained glass (leaded or "Tiffany"). Leaded glass is very old technic of producing windo glasses and traditionaly used for victorial style. The star of Art Noveu is Tiffay technic. But for the doors and ambient we more prefer artistic glasses in "Tiffany" becouse it is much more strong and delicat look from near position. Special in arabic countries is very popular rich victorian mansions with new "tiffany" stained glasses inside. Any way its my opinion and recomendation to use interior designer or master artist for design of stained glass art to make your project just perfect and you will lather nor regret where you invested the money. I can say you the price for autor unique slech will be from 50EUR. I'd go for Grey so that the door will look bigger and more impressive. Look into colour bonding the white window frames in the future to the anthracite grey to match the door. It's surprisingly cheap compared to replacing windows. Here is one such company that undertakes that work, that we have used to give you an idea of what is achievable:- N W Window Repairs We were so impressed we had the conservatory and garage done!

In my humble opinion there is not much to root this house to its 1915 origins so you have two options. To get a period style door and door furniture then I would choose a colour that helps the door furniture stand out. I prefer garage doors to match but feel that the side gate rarely has to match the house it needs to match the garden. Alternatively you could go modern with the door. If this were my house I think I would have a contemporary front door with grand proportions to suit the house. I would have a similar garage door. Lastly I might consider window boxes rather than shutters as shutters visually widen the window but window boxes lengthen them which would help preserve the symmetry you seem to be trying to achieve.

I would get brochures from door companies like Solidor and Hurst. They include various styles and colours and it can really help you choose. Then you can find a supplier. My sisters front door is Solidor in Painswick, a lovely pale grey-green which sits well with both traditional and modern doors. Of course you may prefer a bolder colour and Hursts pale pink door or any of the blues are just gorgeous!

I would add, consider having your side panels in opaque glass for privacy. I know a few people who didn’t initially and have decided to swap their glass once it’s in, adding to the cost.

Thanks, yes, we're having the side panels in opaque. The builder suggested it and initially I thought it wasn't a great idea, but having seen a few with clear side panels, definitely think opaque is the better option. If not only to hide the clutter in the porch!

French grey sounds like a good choice. Have you also considered pebble grey which has warmer tones? Whatever style you choose I would recommend not having a letter box (drafts) and investing in a sturdy wall mounted letter box.
