Comments (8)Leave the brick inside the fireplace but maybe tone it down a little. Get the rest of the brick plastered over, including the little display recesses which are very dated. Comments (9)It looks like what is on the surface is efflorescence caused by damp - either current or historic. There’s possibly no dpc in the chimney structure. Old houses need to breathe. I would not sand and seal, you’ll just trap moisture in the structure. Better to rake out modern mortar and replace with lime mortar which will help damp escape. Have a look at magazines for period properties ( or their websites) , there are often articles about managing damp and or efflorescence in period homes....See Moreugly brick fireplace help!
Comments (10)You need to ask yourself if you like Scandi for its simplicity and functionality, and it’s rough textures in which case this fireplace works and you probably need to change the wall colour so there is less contrast. Or perhaps when you think Scandi you imagine white walls and simple blond wood furniture in which case this fire place is too dark and needs either replacing or made lighter. In a Scandi scheme you could expect to see painted brick so it’s a very valid thing to do- personally I imagine you don’t like the fireplace because of the contrast of this dark brick with the white walls in which case I think the painted brick could focus negative attention on the tiled hearth so you might end up changing that....See More- last month
