Hi Alison, If it's a bedroom, eyelet curtains sound like they'll make the space cosy, and if you choose a blackout lining, they'll also have the added advantage of helping you to sleep better. Curtains aren't the only blackout option though, and it all depends on the look you're after. Perfect Fit blinds clip into uPVC frames for a neat look, so in the case of your windows you'd have three discreet blinds. Choosing a blackout Pleated fabric could work, and when open, they take up very little space at the top of the window so you could let the light flood in in the day. Or why not try a combination of the two? You could always choose a sheer blind and blackout eyelet curtains for a real luxurious effect? Hope that helps, Zoe

We used to own an old farm-worker's cottage with a separate, single storey coal/laundry building behind. We connected the two buildings with a rear hallway link building and gutted the coal/laundry shed to convert it into a new kitchen. We removed the old ceiling, put veluxes in the roof to add light and also kept a few of the joists (we removed some of them but had to put strong bolts through the remaining ones to tie them to the rafters.) We also put collar-ties on some of the other rafters and put extra reinforcements in along the wall-plate. Bottom line, is, I think it's well worth opening up the room into the roof pitch – it will look fabulous – but you should probably have a word with a good structural engineer first! :-)

Sorry for the delay Victoria. The Building Inspector actually came back with more information yesterday, and has asked for me to send the window with a few details to them and he will confirm. But it very much seems like 800mm is the one as you suggested so thank you. They sent me a PDF the same as this link which explains in more detail a few scenarios for window heights and guarding. I will message on this thread again if he comes back with any reason why 800mm is not ok. He did mention in his email that parts K and Parts B sometimes conflict, so it can be very scenario dependant. Cheers
