Keep in mind, the "tolerance" is different for different folks. Clean and simple could be your style. Your choices are much too "cool" in tone for a backsplash. You need to marry the warm tones of your countertop material with your cabinets. Look at the mid range shades in your countertop and compare solid colors of that shade to your cabinets. How does that contrast feel to you? And then look for tile that you love in those shades. Get plenty of samples. Take your time as backsplashes aren't critical to a functioning kitchen.

Reply to: We have had success using light to mid tone tumbled travertines with Typhoon Bordeaux. You can also get it in honed (rather than tumbled) in various sizes, including subway if you prefer that.

Reply to: Hi! We have Typhoon Bordeaux Green and went with a travertine as well, but honed so it has sort of a buttery finish. The color is called "Noce." Then I used a glass tile for an accent but it's not necessary if you are looking for more of an uninterrupted look. The same goes with the different angles for the tiles (horizontal against the granite, diagonal above the border) - I like that differentiation because I have a painted cabinet. A lot of people have moved away from travertine for a subway or more modern glass/glazed tile but I really wanted a warm, cozy area that sort of envelopes you. And, I feel like the Typhoon is more of an "old world" look than others. We have a 1917 colonial so I wanted it to look classic - it's obviously updated, but it's warm and the cream cabinets are glazed to give it more depth. Anyway, I can look up the name if interested- there was a lighter color too. My granite looks darker than it actually is b/c of the lighting but I think you get the idea! Reply to: your kitchen is beautiful! The granite has a lot of movement in it so you might want to keep it simple with your backsplash. Wether you choose stone, glass or ceramic tile keep it neutral. You could however add accent tiles over the cooktop for additional interest. .

Reply to: Wood cabinets, especially oak, have "movement" because of the grain. Your countertops also have movement. So, you will want your backsplash to be simple - otherwise too much movement will cause everything to look too busy instead of seeing the individual beauty of each surface. Consider pulling out a color from the countertop - probably the cream background color and using that color in a simple subway tile backsplash.

Reply to: You definitely need a backsplash that won't be too competitive with this gorgeous slab of Typhoon granite, so ivory or taupe subway tile would be perfect choice. However, travertine tile will give a different vibe to the kitchen but also presents a great solution for Typhoon Bordeaux granite.

Reply to: This is what i did. I didnt want just granite or tile, wanted some color too. So i mixed glass tiles with travertine tiles the same size and used a 6" travertine subway tile. I like the way it turned out.
