Never use oil based paint these days... Brush on a water based "high build" primer (Kilz etc) on wood or melamine that has been cleaned with a TSP/water solution and a Scotch pad. Once that is dry (24 hours), you can brush or spray (HVLP) on a water based urethane paint such as Sherwin Williams Pro. This is essentially "car paint" and after a month of curing, it cannot be scratched or marred in any way. This is what the pro cabinet re-finishers use. You can use your cabinet within that month, but just be careful not to bump the fresh paint. Also, make sure to mask the face frames and back splash with green tape to avoid paint bleed.
