I have some african violets and some Chiritas (violets from SE Asia) going for... couple decades? Well, they're old anyway. There's a couple tricks: 1. enough but not too much light (morning light is best) 2. water thoroughly but let dry out in between waterings - rot from being too moist usually kills them This works for phalaenopsis orchids too.

Don't overwater, water meters are cheap and will teach you how often you need to water. After that, you'll have a feel for it. Or touch the top of the soil before you water. I acquired an abandoned, old, leggy African violet when the company moved and someone abandoned it. I had limp leaves and I felt sorry for it. I pulled off the limp leaves, side shoots grew and now it's a thriving young plant and flowering for me.
