He calls the floor person Michelangelo. 😁 Love your experiments. My father was a chemist so I totally understand. I grew up in a town of chemical engineers and chemists. Our middle school science projects were like no others.

Reply to: @MinnesotaMary and @dani_m08 Here are my red oak floors after (technically during) my renovation. The hardwood on the right side is original from 1969. The wood on the left is new. A good refinisher can work wonders. The floors were very orange before the sanding.

Reply to: High-end water resistant laminate out of Switzerland - Swiss Kronos - is 14mm thick and MAGNIFICENT. It gives you EVERYTHING vinyl 'says' it does...without the vinyl issues. The cost of this high-end laminate will be close to $7/sf. The 'closest' thing you will find is CoreTec Plus = 8.5mm thick with a VERY thin underlayer allowed. It STILL has issues with DIRECT sunlight and too much heat. The laminate does not. Cost of CoreTec Plus = $8.99/sf Cost of Kronos Laminate = $7/sf (ish) I go with HIGH end laminate any day vs. medium end/thin vinyl. And I always like 6mm of cork underlayment = very good with laminate. The 6mm cork underlayment is NOT allowed with vinyl of ANY SORT!!! I am not kidding about this. The people in the 'know' will work with the high-end laminate. Everyone else will try to sell you vinyl...of whatever variety gets them a bigger pay cheque. I'm a cork flooring expert...so I have NO skin in the game. What I do have is a product that can take over from EVERY OTHER FINISH invented. That means I need to know how every other product's down falls...so I can sell against them when speaking with a customer. I've sold Lico products (www.lico.ch) out of Switzerland. They are OUTSTANDING. That's how I know what type of quality Switzerland and Germany produce. There are very few flooring stores that carry the HIGH END (high priced laminates = $5 - $7/sf)...because very few people PAY $7/sf for laminate. They will pay $0.79/sf for laminate. That's also the product that they value as "cheap" laminate. And it is. You cannot compare the cheap laminate to the high end stuff. It's like comparing the family's Shetland pony to a multimillion dollar Arabian Stallion.

Reply to: I'd refinish all of them with a medium neutral brown stain. My favorite is special walnut. Here it is on 95+ year old oak, refinished about 20 years ago. It's held up very well, and doesn't look "dated."

After reading almost every negative review I am definitely reconsidering. Reply to: DO NOt EVER USE BOIS CHAMOIS flooring they sell defective flooring. They are a ridiculous company who sell crappy floors and then try to bully you. What a waste of time, 47,000 in flooring and had to rip the defective floor out of my house! Held up my building for months and months, what a joke. They paint their floors and don't even seal them. BUYER BEWARE, don't buy Bois Chamois , I will post a video of the flooring I bought that scratch when you slightly touch it!

Reply to: I went with a brand called Bois Chamois and I wont even tell you the cost :( it is a 9 inch plank. Imported from Belgium but worth it. The Cimino has like a plastic feel to me, felt very weird to me and in my opinion, it is maple so that's probably why i personally just didnt like it. The Du Chateau has weird oil work again to me! The colors are too "manufactured" like! Anyway look into Bois Chamois it doesnt get any better than them! Thank you all for your help

Reply to: Four years ago we built a new house and installed Naturally Aged Flooring engineered floor. Nail down installation upstairs and glue down on the lower level. We chose a eucalyptus wood floor. We love it! No problems in the 4 years we've owned the house.

Reply to: @Lisa Saunders... Someone DOES make a grey rustic floor... engineered or solid. And in any "shade", specie, or style the Client wants... And although Cancork has done a great job "breaking it all down" on the subject of engineered floors, I'll just add another point... many of the imported products use a "substrate" in their engineered lines, which is of questionable quality in relation to health, stability, moisture resistance and other factors... so keep in mind that the foundation BELOW the actual hardwood top layer is a very important consideration

Reply to: Du Chateau has an awesome line of flooring, very good looking. I believe most of their products have a hard wax oil finish. 5/8" thick with a 4mm wear layer. May I ask what the pricing on this item is where you are?

Reply to: Yes, a lot of reviews are basically fake such as the ones on Lumber Liquidators. You might check out such web sites as pissedconsumers.com and see if that flooring is listed. You could also check the local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the store you're planning to buy it from, and if so, what was the issue. Reply to: marrymaid,, the reddish tone will show through if a lighter stain color is used. But you said she's using white oak? there should be no issues w/undertones. water based topcoats won't amber like the oil base finishes. If she wants a walnut tone, she will be fine. It's light enough to see the grain of the wood, but dark enough so that you won't see any yellowing over time. Provincial is more of a neutral, ashy brown tone. the special walnut has a touch of reddish undertones. Coffee Brown is ashier than Jacobean. have her floor guy test some samples when her wood comes in. when dry, it should be viewed at all times of the day so you can see how light affects the tone. (if it does) Provincial..3 coats of Bona extra matte. also ask about water popping
