Fireplace

I have just moved in and have inherited a very stained fireplace. I think it may be limestone ?

I have tried to clean (using a magic eraser as everyone has recommended) and some of the stains have come out. It still looks grubby and stained.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do with it .....
Paint??
