Fireplace
One of the biggest interventions the designer made was the fireplace surround. “As soon as I walked in, the fireplace caught my eye because it was short and flat and didn’t go all the way up the wall,” Eccles says. “It didn’t have any dimension to it, either.” The designer kept the existing concrete hearth but replaced the surround with cold rolled steel that extends to the ceiling. “It elongated the area and met the height of the high windows,” she says. Now its presence fits in with the dramatic proportions of the two-story ceilings and large windows.
Should we remove mantel or create a false wall at the same depth as the brick, cover the brick with black steel? Less cost and time to remove and redo, but then can't insulate wall behind or near the fireplace.
