Light on the fireplace does not blind your eyes, but illuminates what is below. Lower sconces on the seating bench might be another way to go for lighting the back part of the compound.

Simple shades give some light to the sides but most is downward. Not clear if there is a solid top, but this could work for compound lighting, if wiring would allow.
