I like the herringbone but would use a White or off-white/ cream color tile. also, this would probably be more expensive than a larger scale tile.

we could do something like this with the smaller color tile around the fireplace and then using a small piece of wood/ mantle to separate that from a larger white shiny tile up above. on second thought, I don't know in my small space that this would work as well. probably better to stick with one tile though. I do like this if it was for a larger space.
