I never thought to use planter boxes as a railing for the lower deck! No railing is required by code because of the height, so they could even be very low boxes with tall plants. It looks more finished.

A semi-enclosed pergola like this would be really great for the back deck. Maybe use the trellis to grow something fun in the summer like green beans or fava beans.
