"House at a Glance Who lives here: A couple Location: Washington, D.C., area Size: 1,984 square feet (184 square meters); two bedrooms, 3½ bathrooms Designers: Kirsten Kaplan and Becky Wetzler of Haus Interior Design “For inspiration, we drew on my clients’ love of Paris — the city’s romanticism and mix of architectural styles,” Kaplan says. To give it a look that mixed old-world finishes and industrial patinas, she included rustic wood, concrete and a range of metals. The ground floor of the townhome includes this entry, an office and the garage. The concrete-and-metal console table brings the industrial vibe. The black-and-white photograph shows the view of Paris through the clockface in the Musée d’Orsay. The clients wanted the office to feel like a calm and cozy library. Kaplan added lots of built-in bookshelves. Here they form a cased opening around the entry to the room. If the amount of books this couple has seems familiar, it’s because Houzz featured their previous home, which Kaplan carefully designed to accommodate their large collection of books. "0. Combined laundry and mudroom. Combining laundry and mudroom functions in one space makes practical sense. You can conveniently toss dirty sports or winter gear directly into the wash before grime is tracked in to your home. Kelsey Leigh Design paired the functions in this Oklahoma City space, earning it a Best of Houzz Design award. Gray cabinets (Magnetic Gray by Sherwin-Williams), red tile flooring and light wood planks backing the open storage add style and warmth."

Marble-look porcelain flooring in a checkerboard pattern. “The client always desired black-and-white checkered flooring in her dream home, so this tile combination set the stage for the design direction,” Holmstedt says. “We then paired it with the soft green cabinetry (October Mist by Benjamin Moore) to give it the perfect earthy contrast. "'Uh-oh' moment. 'This is a basement laundry room, so we ran into lots of "How are we going to solve this?" problems,' Gutelli says. 'The No. 1 thing here was all the HVAC in the ceiling. The goal was to make the basement feel like an extension of the home, so drywalled ceilings were a must. To do this, we had to create all kinds of soffits to hide the HVAC.'"

"Other special features. Birch veneer countertop. Tapered brushed-brass hardware. Two 24-inch full-height cabinets store linens and seasonal items. Two base cabinets store family games. 'The original washer-and-dryer placement was underneath the window,' Jones says. 'We were able to give them more storage and counter space by stacking the washer and dryer.' Designer tip. 'Because of their size and use, laundry rooms are always a great place to play and experiment with color or pattern,' Jones says. 'Don’t be afraid to step out of the box and let your creativity shine through in a space like this. Just because it’s a utility room doesn’t mean the design has to be mundane. A really fun floor or a pop of color in the cabinetry can really make a statement without making a huge design commitment.' “Uh-oh” moment. 'The biggest hurdle was the flooring,' Jones says. 'Because this tile was handmade, we had a very difficult time matching the size and pattern. Unfortunately we didn’t notice this until we were a third of the way done with laying the tile. "1. Patterned With a Pairing Designer: Chazzmin Jones of Jones Design Group Location: Indianapolis Size: 126 square feet (11.7 square meters) Homeowners’ request. 'The homeowners were torn between a minimalist design and something more eclectic,' says designer Chazzmin Jones, whose clients found him on Houzz. 'The wife loved things ‘outside the box,’ and the husband wanted something more clean and simple. Our solution was to do a neutral color palette to appease the husband, but to play with patterns and texture through the finishes to satisfy the wife’s need for an eclectic and fun room. We achieved this by choosing a patterned floor tile and paired it with a fun art deco wallpaper.' Main feature. 'The main feature in this room was the Apache black-and-white matte porcelain floor tile,' Jones says. 'The original flooring was a beige vinyl peel-and-stick tile, so we naturally couldn’t go anywhere but up from there. Doing white cabinets and a butcher-block counter balances the color and busy pattern on the floor, allowing nothing in the space to compete with the other. "“She loves treasure hunting for items at Brimfield Antiques Fair,” says McGuill, who kept this in mind when designing the laundry room. She added shelves for the antique finds and covered the walls in classic white subway tile. The farmhouse sink and the bridge faucet also have vintage style. “These kinds of touches really bring a space to life,” she says. One of the most useful features in the room is the dog-washing station for the couple’s vizsla, conveniently located next to the side entry to the house. McGuill found flooring with classic vintage style that also can take on muddy paws. "Elegance in the Powder Room In the first-floor powder room, Kaplan removed the generic vanity and replaced it with a marble and chrome sink stand, and she installed new lighting and designed new millwork for the walls. The sink takes up less visual space in the tight room. And the large mirror makes the room feel bigger. Kaplan’s planning for the millwork was meticulous.
