In this project we did utilize a pop up downdraft. The countertop is much deeper allowing this to work. The other issue is that code also required us to have 9" between a cooking surface and a window. We accomplished this by incorporating a window ledge. I would never recommend you go without ventilation. A good kitchen designer can be creative in implementing ventilation and with new products on the market we can be as sneaky as ever!
We are getting ready to install a range in the same spot and are dealing with a fair number of code issues related to having the range in front of a window (mostly around distance to combustible material). We are having to replace the window behind the exhaust... (We opted for a simple picture window - can't open/close it, but I'm still very pleased to be looking out the window while cooking.)
White says because they wanted uninterrupted views, they went with a downdraft vent at the range in combination with a ceiling-mounted hood that guarantees proper ventilation for the kitchen. “The builder ran trim around the hood that matches the trim around the cabinets,” adds White. This power pack has been combined with an external or remote blower. The external blower isn't visible here, which is a beautiful solution with the simple face and wood trim. A custom unit above a sealed gas-powered stove typically requires 42 inches of clearance to combustible surfaces. A regular gas stove requires 36 inches of distance to the hood. Since a lot of decorative covers are designed to extend on either side of the range's width, they'll also have a bottom panel where the power pack is installed. You'll need to either choose a noncombustible material for the bottom panel or move the hood fan up accordingly.
