Island alternative: Here's an interesting "deep cabinet/countertop" that I suspect takes the place of an island in a galley kitchen, but still gives you great counter top space. Pull up the article, because this little kitchen continues around the corner in an "L" shape
I like the "feel" of this kitchen: warm, welcoming, comfortable. The hearth-like oven area, the footings on the island, the box beam ceiling, the arched windows.
Floor to ceiling cabinets, lit from within; the pillars on either side of the sink.
Not a fan of the all-white, but the details: the pilasters on the island, cabinets, furniture-like toe kicks on the cabinets.

Using a rug/runner along an island to designate/define that space. It acts like a visual "wall" to let the eye know you're transitioning from one space to another.
I like a lot about the functionality of this kitchen, the bronze drainboard with its eventual patina, the organized cook area, minimal open shelving, the pot rack, the magnetic knife holders the pantry, etc. I don't like the wall across from the cooking area that seems to be a hodgepodge of shelving and clutter...I like the way this kitchen functions as a working kitchen.
I like the latches on these cabinets.

Shades of this Wedgwood Blue in the kitchen to counteract the "white/gray" of everything? Our kitchen could use some color...
