Geometric patterns are popular for kitchen backsplashes because they are so versatile. They can add interest without the need for color, or make a statement with bold hues. In this kitchen a little bit of color was cleverly sprinkled into the pattern, so as to be bold but not too out there.

Using the same green-apple lacquer featured on the island base for the inside of the appliance garage added a nice splash of color on the back wall of the kitchen. Meanwhile, the custom, easy-to-clean textured melamine cabinets with flushed recessed metal pulls offer a relief from the bold color of the lacquer.

The oversize counter stools are popular perches. “The kids practically live at this counter,” Visosky says. The easy-to-clean vinyl fabric adds a bold orange burst of color.

The cabinetry is in matte lacquer, and the warm gray color scheme is integral to the whole space,” the designer says. “If we’d gone for a safe choice — all white, for instance — it might have looked clinical and cold.” The kitchen is the Urbo handleless custom matte lacquer kitchen from Roundhouse, painted in Downpipe by Farrow & Ball.

Something blue: The large island grounds the space, providing a pleasing focal point. The kitchen is oriented around the bold blue piece. Tip: Make color count by using it on just one large object.

With the help of interior designer Kara Silkwood of KDS Design, the team chose Carpe Diem granite for the island and bar, and honed Virginia Mist granite for the perimeter. The backsplash is made up of 1- by 4-inch Vihara tiles in an iridescent Metta Irid color.
