Maybe a wood finished top that matches the floor would tie the kitchen in a bit with the rest of the house without making it seem too uniform or singular.

The scale of the tile would seem appropriate for a smaller kitchen like ours. So many of the tile designs are oversize which would be out of proportion with our design. Also, I don' like the rustic/rough finishes or terra cotta.
