Reply to: Whoops, sorry, just re-read your post and you're looking more for design insights on the hood surround itself. We're tackling ours with our experienced carpenter friend next weekend, so I can be in touch if you'd like details? We're planning to build and mount a 2x2 or 2x4 and plywood frame no matter which exterior covering we choose -- sheet copper, trim wood or cement board for tiling. (Lately we've considered zinc since we made our own countertops out of copper and don't want copper overload). If you google search the GardenWeb forums as a whole, you'll find a number of threads with more details. Here's one such thread.

Reply to: I'm doing full overlay- Although I love inset- i've read that you lose about .75" of space (because the doors/drawer fronts are now inside the frame) and I don't like gaps around doors/drawer fronts to show (dust getting sucked into the cabinet) They are pretty though, just not for me. We're doing something similar with the hood but I wanted solid wood for the carcass of the hood- i was concerned about the edge banding coming off with the high heat...and because they can't make solid wood cabinet boxes- they use plywood, this is the only way to do it-ordering oversized solid wood slab doors for the front panel and two sides, the back we'll just use scrap ply since it won't show. and then solid wood panel doors for the front like you have in your pic. Hal Braswell: did you do full overlay in 1 - 1/4 or 1- 3/8?"
