I know you want the cabinets to go to the ceiling and were concerned with too much space/clutter to decorate. The upper cabinets with pained glass would be a great idea to minimize the shelf space

AND...this hearth is WAY too low and the fireplace is too small for the space.

If you decide to go with a hearth, I recommend putting a slab of solid stone for the seat and continue the stone for the face of the hearth. Luanda Bay Tile makes slabs to match their stone.

We could do cabinets on the bottom and open shelving on the top similar to this BUT I really like the idea of taking the espresso wood from the island and making the top of the cabinets/drawers and possible continuing it for each shelf.
