Coffered Ceiling

A coffered ceiling has boxlike recessed areas between beams. Originally devised as a way to lighten the load of heavy stone ceilings in Greek and Roman architecture, coffered ceilings are now an ornamentation to give the appearance of coffering. Constructed with real or faux beams, trimmed out with moldings and painted, they can be very formal and detailed.
