Dani and Hank! Here are a few more looks to consider for you backyard space. It is our opinion that because you have such a large solid hill back there, that planting the hill with some low water, low maintenance plants to create texture would be incredible. We do know that you would love to create a deck or other seating area up there as well. It is our opinion that it could be done, but would require some large excavation to make the area level, due to the high concentration of rock. We love the idea of extending either a wooden deck or multi teared concrete patio from your door across what is currently the drainage ditch. This would give you more room to entertain as well. The draining could still flow underneath if need be, and you can eliminate the other lawn that you are not in love with. The lawn that your kiddos love can stay and be edged to keep it all in place. Removing the rock that you do not really like and bringing in something more modern, like small river rock would really tie it all together and allow the water to flow across the yard, as it has been.

Planting a few varieties of native grasses would look incredible on the hill. Native grasses are Water wise and low maintenance, and would be an incredible contrast to the block walls that surround.

It would be very cost effective to create a hillside of texture and color using plants, and spend the bulk of your budget making the lower portion into a deck or extending a modern concrete patio over what is currently the drainage ditch.

Another option that might help to keep things in budget {as the rock hill will be tricky} would be to think about extending either a wooden or concrete patio from your back door, over the top of the drainage and out to where the other patch of grass that you don't use is currently. The hill could be seeded with native grasses and wildflowers, and just sort of left to nature. If you created a pathway up to the top, there could still be a lovely viewpoint, maybe just a bit more rugged.

Creating a short, simple concrete retaining wall towards the top of the rock hill could be a great way to raise the level of the soil to create the gathering space + fire pit you are hoping to have up there.

We love the idea of creating a wooded deck that extends over the top of the current drainage ditch. Concrete could also be an option. Using geometric concrete pavers as pathways throughout would really tie it all together. We also love the texture created by planting grasses and low water plants like yarrow, sedum, and other lovely colorful pollinators.
