Rustle up some throws This dining area in an open-plan barn conversion has a lovely Scandi vibe thanks to the combination of natural wood with cosy sheepskin throws and velvet cushions. The built-in bench provides relaxed seating and, with the addition of a few extra cushions, could double up as a second sofa in the open-plan space.Check out these inspiring ideas for a cosy, country-style Christmas
Create a boothThis kitchen has a fun, American-diner feel thanks to the seating booth cleverly built into the back of the L-shaped island. It’s a neat design that makes the most of the available space and creates a cosy, clearly defined eating area in the open-plan room. Pendant lighting above the table also zones the spot nicely.
At number 3…This classic, solid-wood family kitchen, painted in fashionable indigo blue, was designed by Jamie Blake of Blakes London as part of a new extension on a Victorian semi.Among the (many) standout features are the beautiful black-framed doors leading out to the garden and, in fact, these influenced the ‘classic industrial’ style of the kitchen. A family of five live in the house, so the kitchen needed to be a hard-working space. In particular, the large island packs in a number of different functions. There are two sinks (one prep, one main) and two dishwashers. It also has two integrated bins, a wine cooler and pan drawers. A row of factory-style metal pendants suspended above adds to the industrial feel of the space and provides plenty of task lighting.
The neutral, earthy colours paired with the natural smoked oak is one of the many things the owner loves about the kitchen.“The island is painted in Humphrey Munson’s own paint colour, Cobbles, while the perimeter cabinetry is in a paler shade called Linen,” Humphrey explains. Place a table under a skylightA side return extension like this one is a common sight in Victorian homes. Here, the owners have made the most of its large skylights by placing a dining area directly underneath them to bathe diners in sunlight. If you don’t have skylights, the same effect can be achieved with targeted pendant lighting overhead or an arched floor lamp to wash the table in an ambient glow.
