would not want the open space above dining room adjacent to kitchen, but if we had entryway into living room a ~4x8ft open space out of the sunroom might work just above the entryway.

Maybe a contemporary interpretation if this, but only one side and one column and a bench built into that side. Lower half wall, would not want to obstruct view. On the column you could also have coat hooks (not for majority of coats, maybe just couple nice dress coats.
