We used it on an outdoor bbq for becuase it gives a very authentic wood look with out the up keep. It works great for contemporary and modern designs.

Hardieboard - or cement board comes to mind. But it will look like painted wood not natural. Have you considered cladding with a wood-look tile. It would be a more contemporary solution. Any pics you could post of the facade?
