This large kitchen in a converted schoolhouse needed an unusual approach. The owners wanted an eclectic look – using a diverse range of styles, shapes, sizes, colours and finishes. The final result speaks for itself – an amazing, quirky and edgy design. From the black sink unit with its ornate mouldings to the oak and beech butcher’s block, from the blue and cream solid wood cupboards with a mix of granite and wooden worktops to the more subtle free-standing furniture in the utility. Our brief was to create a calm, modern country kitchen that avoided cliches - and to intrinsically link to the garden. A weekend escape for a busy family who come down to escape the city, to enjoy their art collection, garden and cook together. The design springs from my neuroscience research and is based on appealing to our hard wired needs, our fundamental instincts - sociability, easy movement, art, comfort, hearth, smells, readiness for visitors, view of outdoors and a place to eat. The key design innovation was the use of soft geometry, not so much in the planning but in the three dimensionality of the furniture which grows out of the floor in an organic way. The soft geometry is in the profile of the pieces, not in their footprint. The users can stroke the furniture, lie against it and feel its softness, all of which helps the visitors to kitchen linger and chat. The fireplace is located in the middle between the cooking zone and the garden. There is plenty of room to draw up a chair and just sit around. The fold-out doors let the landscape into the space in a generous way, especially on summer days when the weather makes the indoors and outdoors come together. The sight lines from the main cooking and preparation island offer views of the garden throughout the seasons, as well as people coming into the room and those seating at the table - so it becomes a command position or what we call the sweet spot. This often results in there being a family competition to do the cooking. The woods are Canadian Maple, Australian rosewood and Eucalyptus. All appliances are Gaggenau and Fisher and Paykel.

The shaker style has proven to very popular this year, with nearly every handmade kitchen we have featured on our site, created in the shaker style! It’s not surprising though, when they look this good. For this particular project we have used a combination of natural oak with a light lacquer on the two furniture runs. These feature our high quality 30mm frame and door construction with a birch veneer interior, materials that will enable this kitchen to last many, many years. The handles are one that we actually have on a display in our showroom. A verdigris handle with an interesting pattern. On this project we have a couple of bespoke furniture features, the first of which is the custom oak shutter system for the counter top unit. The special unit uses a roller shutter that has lots of narrow oak slats that move seamlessly up and out of the way to reveal the toaster and two shelves. The second is the pull out shelves in two of the 900 base units. These use modern soft close runners that enable you to pull out the shelves and easily access everything stored on them. This removes the need of having to get very low to try and find that bowl right at the back that you don’t always use, a great feature we believe. The final great feature of this kitchen is the walk in larder, this uses a bespoke birch veneered plywood construction, and the lovely thing about this material is the beautiful layering you get on the edges of the ply. The outer doors of the larder were also made by us, they are solid oak and feature a tear drop opening on the front. Inside one of the doors we have created a bespoke spice rack. Inside of the larder you can see the plywood layered edges as well as the extra deep drawers. These have a sweeping profile with a hand-scoop at the front. All of these run on modern soft-close runners. Above the drawers you have three staggered shelves, all of which are deep and provide a huge amount of storage space.
