An award winning project to transform a two storey Victorian terrace house into a generous family home with the addition of both a side extension and loft conversion. The side extension provides a light filled open plan kitchen/dining room under a glass roof and bi-folding doors gives level access to the south facing garden. A generous master bedroom with en-suite is housed in the converted loft. A fully glazed dormer provides the occupants with an abundance of daylight and uninterrupted views of the adjacent Wendell Park. In the bedroom, the floral meadow print Borastapeter wallpaper creates a calm, relaxing feel and gives a nod to my client’s Swedish heritage. I used the pattern as a starting point for the rest of the room, picking out the rest of the interiors to complement the colours within the paper. There is a cosy corner with a bespoke storage bench seat, with Colours of Arley striped cushions to add a fun, colourful twist to the scheme. The headboard is also upholstered in Colours of Arley fabric, and the reading light and switches are neatly incorporated into it to give a streamlined, luxury feel.

To dwell and establish connections with a place is a basic human necessity often combined, amongst other things, with light and is performed in association with the elements that generate it, be they natural or artificial. And in the renovation of this purpose-built first floor flat in a quiet residential street in Kennington, the use of light in its varied forms is adopted to modulate the space and create a brand new dwelling, adapted to modern living standards. From the intentionally darkened entrance lobby at the lower ground floor – as seen in Mackintosh’s Hill House – one is led to a brighter upper level where the insertion of wide pivot doors creates a flexible open plan centred around an unfinished plaster box-like pod. Kitchen and living room are connected and use a stair balustrade that doubles as a bench seat; this allows the landing to become an extension of the kitchen/dining area - rather than being merely circulation space – with a new external view towards the landscaped terrace at the rear. The attic space is converted: a modernist black box, clad in natural slate tiles and with a wide sliding window, is inserted in the rear roof slope to accommodate a bedroom and a bathroom. A new relationship can eventually be established with all new and existing exterior openings, now visible from the former landing space: traditional timber sash windows are re-introduced to replace unsightly UPVC frames, and skylights are put in to direct one’s view outwards and upwards. photo: Gianluca Maver

Modern attic teenager's room with a mezzanine adorned with a metal railing. Maximum utilization of small space to create a comprehensive living room with a relaxation area. An inversion of the common solution of placing the relaxation area on the mezzanine was applied. Thus, the room was given a consistently neat appearance, leaving the functional area on top. The built-in composition of cabinets and bookshelves does not additionally take up space. Contrast in the interior colours scheme was applied, focusing attention on visually enlarging the space while drawing attention to clever decorative solutions.The use of velux window allowed for natural daylight to illuminate the interior, supplemented by Astro and LED lighting, emphasizing the shape of the attic.
