Shepherd's Bush HouseContemporary Bathroom, London

An award winning project to transform a two storey Victorian terrace house into a generous family home with the addition of both a side extension and loft conversion.

The side extension provides a light filled open plan kitchen/dining room under a glass roof and bi-folding doors gives level access to the south facing garden. A generous master bedroom with en-suite is housed in the converted loft. A fully glazed dormer provides the occupants with an abundance of daylight and uninterrupted views of the adjacent Wendell Park.

Choose uniformityThe unusual tiling is the most striking feature of this small attic bathroom, rather than its size. The designers, Studio 30 Architects, chose to wrap square white tiles with dark grout around the basin and shower tray to minimise their visual impact. The effect, particularly thanks to the unusual curved edges (the product is called DTILE) is that these features blend into the wall and floor respectively. The addition of a mirror positioned to duplicate the skylight also helps to expand the room visually.

Can homeowners live in their property during building work? “Most people do live in,” Matthew says. “Obviously, if a ceiling has to come down, they can’t be there for the whole job. The main disruption is when the stairs go in at week three, but even then they just need to arrange to be out for the day. “Customers often think the stairs go in last,” he says, “but we prefer to do that earlier, before the plumbing and electrics. Most of the work is done via scaffolding for the first fix, with all materials craned in rather than going through house.”“Eighty per cent of the time clients will be able to lead a normal, undisturbed life while the work is being carried out,” Deepak agrees.

Play with shapesIt’s a white sink, but not as we know it. The designers of this quirky washspace have shown just how creative you can be with some unassuming white, square tiles. Not only have they made the tiles appear to bend around the walls and floor, they’ve also tiled the whole surface of the sink.By aligning the joins on the wall and the basin, they’ve created an almost cartoon-like effect of a protruding wall. The monochrome scheme looks deceptively simple, but in fact the design is extremely clever.
