Sutton Timber

When we planned to open up our living room and dining room, we were looking for a beautiful wooden floor. I’ve always had a link to coppiced chestnut as we grew up near some chestnut woods and frequently walked in them. I appreciated the way the trees regenerated after being felled. So when I did an Internet search and came up with Sutton Timber as a company able to supply chestnut flooring, I was sold! We visited the yard in Suffolk and very much like the character and tiger striping of chestnut. As our house has a cellar, we were a bit concerned about humidity levels, so opted for the stability of engineered wood. We chose 120 mm boards as they were more in keeping with the other floorboards in the house, with a brushed finish to emphasise the grain. The floor was installed in June 2018 and it’s beautiful! The sinuous ripples in the grain and interesting tiger striping make it a real talking point. Having the same floor in the hall and living and dining areas gives the seamless and unfussy look we wanted. Ben was extremely helpful and patient, giving us helpful advice. Sam who laid the floor commented that the timber was some of the best he’d ever seen.

I have been very pleased with every step of the operation for my flooring from discussing it with Ben - to the choice of timbers he made - to the delivery and finally the finished look which is beautiful. I visited the sawmill to collect window boards from solid elm to match the engineered flooring and was particularly impressed by the sawmill itself having seen quite a few this was by far the most organised, tidy and efficient to my eye. Would I recommend Ben and Sutton Timber - yes without a second thought. No questions or requests were too many and the finished products are excellent. Above all I was able to source elm after having lived in a house for over 40 years with ancient elm floors this was the nearest I could get to continuing my love of the wood.

used Sutton Timber's first grade solid English oak in my three reception rooms, two cupboards, hall, stairs, landing and bedroom. My floor fitter said it was the best oak in England and it is hard to believe anything else. The wood is simply beautiful – a calm, clear, grain with just the right amount of variation and movement in it. I never get tired of looking at it and it draws admiring compliments as soon as visitors get through the door. Ben is amazingly knowledgeable about wood and finishes and is fastidious when selecting each plank. He was really helpful at every step of the process, from suggesting choices of timber to organising delivery and advising on acclimatising and preparing the wood. Sutton Timber was a really fortunate find after starting an online search for "light coloured engineering wood flooring" (I knew I didn't want oak!). Having researched (too!) extensively the "commonly stocked" engineering woods (mostly being oak!), when the sample of ash flooring arrived from Sutton Timber, it immediately exceeded the quality of the other engineering woods, was in the same price bracket, and what was more, it was exactly what I was looking for.
