We used Ben Cunliffe architects for our self build SIP house. We were initially attracted to the style and contemporary design that BCA had previously constructed. We were impressed from initial consultation through to installation and completion. We were particularly impressed with the level of detail involved in our SIP panel design as this is a fairly new concept in the UK. Although BCA has used SIP previously along with standard timber frames. They are a very professional company and we would definitely use again and highly recommend. A great experience from start to finish, an excellent contemporary extension to our traditional Lakeland cottage. Ben's designs were simply fabulous. He completely understood what we were looking for from the off. Attention to detail was key on our project and they nailed it. We chose Ben Cunliffe Associates for the design of the extension and remodel of our 1960s dormer bungalow on the west coast for three main reasons: 1) Ideas, flair and ease of discussion; 2) Quality of detailed drawings; 3) Awareness of project costs. They surpassed our expectations on the first two points, but not quite on the 3rd. Both Ben and Nick were easy to work with. The discussion and challenge necessary to ensure a design which worked for our way of living, was a stimulating and enjoyable experience. Nick’s attention to detail is excellent. Our builder commented on the quality of the drawings and we believe this contributed significantly to the smooth running of the build. I initially had unrealistic expectations for the budget and liked the fact that Ben told us this straight at the first meeting. The budget was amended, and although there were some hints it might be more, we weren’t prepared for the builder’s estimate which was significantly more. Our timescales for initial design were relaxed but once the build was approaching, Nick was prompt in processing changes to drawings for cost reducing changes in scope and in assisting with a minor amendment to planning in response to an emergent issue with the existing structure. We now have experience of living in our new home for 3 of the 4 seasons and are extremely pleased with the design. It optimises the light, space and views and really works for us. The vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom conspires to give a feeling of light and space, yet at the same time impart a sense of warmth and security. In the whole house there is only one minor detail I would change and we attribute the success of the project to the time Nick and Ben invested with us, to understand our needs. If I could speak to myself at the beginning of the project, I might advise involving a structural engineer and if, practicable, the builder at an earlier stage, but I would not hesitate to recommend Ben Cunliffe Associates as architects and particularly Nick Dent for the detailed design.

I expected the process of converting our Lake District barn into holiday lets to be thoroughly stressful. I could not have been more wrong. Working with Ben and Rachel Cunliffe and their delightful team has been pure pleasure. I particularly appreciated their ability to evolve ideas as the project progressed. Not only has the result been far better than my expectations but the whole experience is one I shall always treasure. And how often can one say that with such projects? As far as the interior decoration was concerned, Rachel Cunliffe was always highly sensitive to my own tastes and proved to be brilliant at sourcing what was needed.
