It's a must-have feature for a loft or a warehouse, and nothing says industrial quite like exposed brick walls.

Exposed brick adds much character to a living space. I owned a textile mill condo in New England for 10 years.

I really like them in very contemporary spaces, I have a huge stone fireplace in my modern house and it forms a wall in my kitchen against which we have a row of stainless base cabinets and a 6 burner stainless stove and a stailess hood fan I love it

POLL: Conservatories and garden rooms - yay or nay?
Q

I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise.

Painted brick - yay or nay?
Q

I have to admit that I love it! Roughly painted bricks can add a beautifully rough touch to an otherwise very clinical space and act as a feature in and of itself. Solidly painted walls can add that subtly needed touch when you can't quite go all out in naked brick, but as several people mention above - it's all about the space and getting the right feel for where you are and who's going to be living there in my opinion.

POLL: Herringbone pattern - yay or nay?
Q

I have always loved this look. I screams Parisian to me, though I don't know why. I've just bought a new build so have to do all the flooring and my current dilemma is whether or not to do just the entrance and hallway or the whole ground floor in herringbone. Maybe that's a poll question later! :)

Is Orange the New Black?
Q

Orange is a brilliant colour on the walls but getting the right shade was tricky. I used to have a living room with two walls a bright/burnt orange and the opposite two walls were pillar box red. It had two big sash windows and white above the picture rail and on the ceiling with a pale wood stripped floor. I loved that house!

Love exposed brick, but I'm not sure how practical it would be as a backsplash. I would hate to have to scrub it clean.

I scrub my stone a couple of times a year takes about 1/2 hr so no big deal.

I considered it for my kitchen remodel because my exterior and interior walls are brick. I'd have put a million or so coats of sealer on it. ;-) Unfortunately, some of the mortar was in bad shape.
Chookchook2, you're on a roll today, lol.

I've been trying to talk my other half into a brick splash back in my new painted grey kitchen but he's having none of it. :-( So my next idea is to have it on the chimney breast in the dining part of the kitchen!

I really like exposed brick walls in large rooms with very high ceilings. I think it works very well in this kitchen; the hanging pans and steely extractor hood lends an industrial/utilitarian feel which complements the exposed brick wall. The colourful bowl pendant lamps also subtly echo the industrial feel, adding a touch of colour and playfulness towards the ceiling and therefore breaking the monotony which can sometimes be the problem with exposed brick walls.

Exposed brick can be stunning, especially when it's mixed up with modern touches too. This is an art deco light that we hung on exposed brick and it works a treat!

It depends on the brick and colour etc. For example, the one you show above, is something I would certainly consider keeping. It is bright and light, If it was dark then I most likely wouldn't like it.

We have an exposed brick surround in the kitchen - I'm keen to keep it as part of our forthcoming remodel. Also like painted bricks - white looks good in a loft space.

To nansdrew, one of the couples on a local renovation show in Australia wanted to expose the brick in the kitchen. To make it easy to keep clean, they put a sheet of clear glass over the top. Beauty and practicality. http://www.theblockshop.com.au/images/rooms/H2_KK_Rm5_5272_copy.jpg

It's beautiful, like it very much, however I am not a wood person and for myself I'd change this woodden work tops in no time.

Totally Agree with Studio D. Interiors - exposed bricks can add a touch of unfinished intrigue.to any room, and of course provide an excellent backdrop for rustic or tribal pieces..

Exposed brick provides a stunning base for interior design! The structural beauty creates an industrial feel which can be softened with clever design details such as light colours and softer textures. For those not fortunate enough to have exposed brick, we offer a range of high resolution brick wallpaper - http://www.wallpapered.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=brick

I'm desperate for exposed brick in my next apartment - it's probably my dream feature for any home.

kinda depends. Good quality bricks with tight mortar joints helps the home have the solidity and strength that we like from industrial looks. It also affects the light quality casting warmth across the space.
not that bothered about rough rustic bricks

I can't decide! I love it both ways! I think I Would have it where there is a bit of brick. Like some of the paint is fades revealing the brick... I don't think I have explained its well.

Exposed brick works well in a home especially in larger rooms. It provides warmth and character, and of course, colour. With so much potential and added benefits when decorating and choosing the accessories.

Creating the illusion of exposed brick with brick slip tiles is always a great option for those of you who are unable to strip back walls. These create a great feature wall and can really make a statement. One recent customer used our brick slips to create the perfect exposed brick look behind their log burner, we hope this gives you some inspiration!

It truly depends on the property and style of the existing home to make a good judgement; our own office has exposed beams with white walls which suits the property well.

We have just spied brick behind the skirting board of the wall between the kitchen and my daughter's room! Will definitely be taking a chisel to the plaster on kitchen side. For the 'splashback' issue and grease issues (a chef friend of mine swears these will be a curse with rough, exposed brick) I'm thinking of running a band of mirror between the worksurface and a low, shallow shelf, with a taller panel of tempered glass plonked behind the hob. If we find the bricks above the shelves get really dirty, we could turn shelves into backless cupboards with glass fronts that go all the way up...

I am sorry, but I have just predicted , see our 2018 blog, that industrial style is over exposed, thanks to every other new restaurant in town !

That said, I do like exposed brick walls. The older and greyer the better.

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...
